Need some roof help.
-
How about giving us some pictures of how your roof is now so we can help "Un-Lame" it
-
Ive since reverted back to before the roof, but i can post some pics of the bit that needs the roof. I JUST re uploaded the model also.
-
What pitch, overhang, etc... are you wanting?
Have you seen TIG's new Roof Ruby Script:
http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?p=6648#p6648 -
let me bust out photoshop to put the images together, stupid paint just doesnt cut it.
To be honest, ive never used a script, but im willing to try it out.As for pitch/overhang etc, have a look at the concept on this page:
http://www.houseplans.com/plans/e/312-266e-3169.jpgSince thats the house im sort of attempting. and yes i know there is a couple things missing.
-
Heres my overly complex roof. All those lines through there are just the interior walls, no sense to model over them if you cant see them.
Ive been trying to keep the file size down and i think ive done a decent job of it anyways.
-
yeah that roof script doesnt work on this thing, unless i raise the walls 1/4 inch and make a solid face across everything.
-
Using TIG's Roof script I played around with your house a bit during my lunch... have to get back to work now, but here are some shots of what I did.
Play around with the script. Or the way I usually do a roof is the attached tutorial.
-
Did you add another face to the top to get the script to work on it? I cant do it all at once cuz every option says either select one face of select a rectangle.

Don't raise it. Make your building a component then draw the outline of your walls seperate from the building component. That way you have a nice clean face to work with.
-
I will say that on the lower roofs, I used the gable part of the script then just extended the roof to the building. On the low slope, I just grabbed the ridgeline and moved it over.
Keep your roof and building components seperated. Everything will want to stick together otherwise.
Gotta go for now, I will check back in a bit.

It really shows how powerful TIG's Ruby is.
Just for the central section of that roof, this script was invaluable, so quick to get a perfect hipped roof. -
Ignore this if I'm wrong, but maybe learning one of the old methods will help understanding the quick and easy (I think more fun too :`)
The attached isn't a nice tut like Eric's (I still fight text in SU) but what time I had today for fun.
EDIT: Okay, I thought Eric's tut was going to be on the ruby...then saw your other thread, Boo, sorry. This one I'll leave even though it is the same except cruder, less intentional, and goes a bit beyond...let's call it "Roof Design PlayingaroundtillitsclosetosomethingreasonableorIlikeitwhichevercomesfirst":
left is a plan for a hip roof and a face above, perpendicular to one wall, with the outside edge at 16/12 (my chosen roof slope)
next right is the follow-me tool result after a couple of intersect-with-model's (select all the roof stuff, do the intersect several times)
next right is a crossing pick deletion of the top trash (note some of the roof faces still escaped, you'll have to draw over an edge to get them back)
next is the roof all cleaned up
~behind this is the start of changing the config by continuing roof edges up till they intersect with projected planes...keep going till you don't have interior valleys
~behind still is the cleaned up exagerationnext right is how you think about tying the second floor roof down onto the first (last "next" is same as tying the first floor roof up into the second)
I'll be back with an apology and some help if this is too cryptic.
Best, Tom. -
nah i dont need that much help, i had a roof on there, i just didnt like it, the one using the script looks good enough for me.
I know how to create a roof, just not too good at making one that works well with the house.
Anyways, its done now, Im gonna do a little work to it to get it to look right though. Thanks for the help.

Just registering and testing to see if I've done everything right. Even though I'v been with SU from the beginning, and done some awesome stuff, Ive gotten away from the "trenches" over the years so I am re-imersing myself by starting in the newbie posts. Played with the roof script and find it much more intuitive than Architectural desktop which also has something of a roof applet. Thanks for letting me play with it and getting my feet wet all over again

Look at http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=153&t=1519 to get v2.0 of the 'new improved' roof script.
Incidentally: Bootfredlay's manual tutorial on making a hipped roof [and tomdesk's] is more or less how the Roof.rb hipped roof tool works - but automated !
-
In my opinion however, one should always find out the ways how things can be done in SU before applying a plugin/ruby whatever that will just make these things "easier".
Plugins can have their "limits" and when you reach them and you don't know where (and how) you are, you will be at the same - starting - spot.
I use rubies all the time (as well as "pre made" components) but to know what you are using is very necessary.
I hope I didn't hurt any ruby scripters here!

Thats what im saying, learn the hard way first so you can understand how its done. That way if there is a problem you understand what us going on with the model and have an idea of where to look.
