Hello everyone. I'm testing/trying out Sketchup Pro to see if it's right for our company's needs. We are in the upstream oil and gas industry--we wish to create solid-appearing 3d models of the subsurface. Primarily that means models of underground geological structure (= the way strata undulate and are faulted). For the most part these surfaces (the tops of a rock strata layer or a vertical fault) will all be non-coplanar. You have probably already guessed the more horizontal (layer) surfaces are not at all unlike topographic surfaces--just underground. These can't really be drawn freehand--they need to be the actual x-y-z surfaces we have interpreted from 3d seismic data. I can export these geologic surfaces from my interpretation/exploration software as flat ascii x-y-z data files and modify to hopefully be imported into Sketchup. From what I can see so far, the .dem file format might be the best bet, but (I hope) many of you know of other ways as well. Right now I don't even have a proper sample .dem text file to look at for comparison. Can you guys point me to similar discussions of this within your forum and/or give me advice. I'd be happy if the moderator should decide to start a new thread with this too. Thanks!

How about you, James. I'm talking about importing multiple tessellated surfaces into SU and using Intersect/Model, then clipping away the excess. Imagine creating a cube of non-coplanar sides this way. In your experience with this forum has this been discussed before?

Hi Ron and welcome - your project looks interesting. There are already a couple of cartoon artists here and their work in SU is quite exciting so I guess it is a good tool for it.

Gealagie, I have already posted in your topic - that's another nice field!

Vica, I have added you to the French UserGroup so you should be able to see the forum now.

Hello every one. Today is my first day at this site, but I have been using SketchUp for a little more than 4 months. I have a queation. I would like to produce a series of screen of screen shots that i can use as a slide show to show my brother how I am able to draw roof rafters. I want the tape measure on screen, and want the screen shot to capture the exact measurement, showing the construction line being inferenced to another line. Does anybody know how to do this?

You can use a software called snaggit which costs $50, or you can get JING which is a watered down version of snaggit for free.

Or you can hit the printscreen button on your PC and then edit it in photoshop.

I'd recommend trying the trial version of snaggit first though,

Besides being an all-around useful image application, IrfanView can take screen-shots using a hotkey to save a series of screenshots to a folder.

                        Hi CubeSquare and welcome.

Instead of just taking still screenshots, why don't you record the whole process in a video file?

There are lots of screen recorders out there - commercial and free alike. An example: AutoScreenReorder.

                                Hi,

My name is Fred, and I am from the Netherlands.
I discovered SU about a month ago and I am loving it and to be honoust, i have joined this forum because i have a question and need your help.

In my holidays I am working in a shelter in Bosnia, and here we have a cabin (is that the correct English word?) with a lot of wooden beams which is supposed to be a house. (excuse me for incorrect English every now and then).
I am trying to learn SU myself and with the help of a Dutch forum but i have a question which they also cannot answer and who knows, maybe you can?
I have created a model of all the wooden beams we have in the shelter and this should become a house. Unfortunately we do not have the constructionplans... (and actually we are not even sure if we have all the beams)
In a thread on the Dutch forum (which unfortunately is Dutch) i have explained what we have and i have inserted the model.
Is there anybody around here who can play with this model and make a correct house? (thé correct house if possible or a big house that also might be possible? (without sawing if possible)

The link to the thread (also with some pictures that might help):
                                http://www.sketchupforum.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1040&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

and a link to the model:
                                http://www.sketchupforum.nl/gallerij/balken_voor_forum.skp

If you need more information, feel free to ask,
a lot of volunteers working in Bosnia (and the owners) would be very happy if this pile of wood could become some kind of house...

                                Regards,
                                Fred

Qué sais je? there is still so much to be learned...

There are a whole bunch of Dutch people here as well so I hope they will be able to help after they read those posts.

Until then, here are a couple of topics about such log cabins (as they are called I think):

                                    Hi everyone,

Im Stew a new SU member, Im a town planner in the UK, who also designs buildings and site layouts - a frustrated Architect really and its a useful overlap. I use Caddie for drawing and have watched other SU users over the years and finally decided to play with it now. Its actually really addictive! -Im going to have to ask for some advice about putting too much information into my drawings!

Anyway, thank you so far to Gaieus and Chris for your help on my newbie landscape/topo issues - really appreciated,

I had SU4 when I worked in a Planning Consultancy and my brother in law bought me SU5 as a birthday present when i left (I mentioned that I liked it but hadn't got to play with it at all). I might buy SU7 - is it much better - hard to think that it could be

Well, at least upgrade from SU 5 to 6 was free - you could've tried it. Now to 7 it is 95$.

There've been serious improvements in both steps. Whether it is MUCH better or not; you should try. Good news is that you can always try the free version and decide if you need the "extras" later.
