I have been holding back on this and before I post it on the SketchUp forum, I thought I would get some feedback from participants on the SketchUcation forum. I am proposing to suggest that Trimble set up a new license for us "hobby" users. I no longer have any income from anything I do with SketchUp.

In the image below, you will see my suggestion of the features that should be included and my license price suggestion. There should also be some strict rules that using the "Hobby" version should not be/can not be used for commercial purposes.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated before I post the suggestion on the SketchUp forum.

Interesting that I just looked on the SketchUp forum and saw this post. In some ways, it is kind of the same thing I was thinking about.

IMO these cheaper versions they are offering are not very useful. Any version that does not support plugins is almost worthless. I have been using SU for almost 10 years and I have created very few things that did not depend on plugins. Again JMO πŸ˜„

It's an interesting idea but I don't think Trimble is that kind of corporation. Their customer base is largely around infrastructure, agriculture, railroads, construction, etc. They do have the student, higher ed, and non-profit subscriptions. Outside of that and you end up being in no man's land.

Maybe you can set up a 501(c)(3). πŸ’š

in the example - you have "pro" checked under hobby πŸ˜„ but what should be check is the ability to use extensions (plugins). so a desktop version, not pro (so no layout etc) with ability to run extensions (creating DC would be nice as well but ...)

Thanks for the reply Glenn. What I was trying to check (and I should circle it in red I think) was the desk top capability (thus support for plugins). I much prefer a desktop version as opposed to a web version. I have not created any dynamic components but agree with you there. I would also support real restrictions on commercial use (again the emphasis would be on β€œhobby” use).

Here is an updated version of my Hobby License suggestion:

                Hobby License Suggestion.png

I am trying to emphasize the following"

                • Desktop version
                • While you can use the iPad and Web versions, it is not required
                • Ability to use plugins
                • Ability to import models from the 3D Warehouse
                • NO commercial use and restrictions for violation

Again, feedback would be appreciated. Especially any thoughts about submitting this suggestion to Trimvle on the SketchUp forum. πŸ˜„

... I have also been using SketchUp for as long as I can remember (v4 or v5, I'm not sure). And to this day I use SketchUp 2017 Make privately and yes, almost daily. In this private context, however, never commercially because instead we run SketchUp in commercial form in the company with at the moment about 24 pro-Licences.
Your proposal Ntxdave is aimed at private, non-commercial use and, as far as I can see, roughly replicates the scope of 2017 Make, but in an up-to-date form, and I would love such a licensing model, even if it were accompanied by a reasonably low price as you suggested!

I simply don't want to have to do without this tool, which has long since become something of an "old buddy", if I can name it that way...

I can't think of any possible way to check and or enforce this. Other than some sort of watermark?

Yes, it would be hard to enforce but it needs to be stated. Maybe someone can come up with an idea . Especially something other than a water mark (at least one that is visible).

Or just do like Form Z, BricsCAD and a few others and just not give a sh*t and have a free version that can be used for any purpose what so ever? πŸ˜‰
I do agree with a Hobby (Lite) license without Layout that allows plugins. Maybe one day πŸ˜„

OK, I hope this is the last update but I looked at the list of features again and saw that I had some errors. So here is (I hope) my last update before I suggest this in the SketchUp forum.
