Best Way to Model These Stone Details
-
I have an up and coming project for an OPW managed heritage site in Ireland and I was wondering how or what would be the best way to model some stone details. I have attached a couple of images I have, one with all the details and doors that must be modelled and a second one with a little closeup of a particular detail. Everything has to be modelled with reasonable accuracy (all stonework and doors). What u think?

Can you get a better, straight on view of the stonework at the top of the door? Idf so, I would be inclined to import the image and then trace over it with the various drawing tools. Textures for the interior detail, though.
How would the model be used after it is created?

Thank u for the quick reply Dave. It will be used in a rendered animation, like Twinmotion, with opening doors to enter the castle. The original model may be stored as well as a reference model too or further projects. I have yet to get more interior details, but I would like to make a start on it if possible. I also have front stone steps with balustrades to do but those are pretty straight forward to do.

Sounds like a cool project. A tip for you if you are going to trace the image. Temporarily change the edge color to red or orange or something that will show clearly over the image so you can see what you are doing.
Good luck with it. It would be nice to see what you come up with.

I'd use hard surface modeling to recreate it if LIDAR isn't an option. That way you have some level of non-destructive up sampling. It would also be easier to correct are lower poly mesh.
It's a lovely abbey door. I get Rock of Cashel vibes

Thnx for the replies guys. I think it will have to be hard surface modelling, no LIDAR option with this one. Its not the Rock of Cashel Rich (I know it well, only few miles from where my family are from). I will take on board your ideas and make a start. I will let you know how its going in this thread.
