Extension install problem
-
Using SketchUp 8. Downloaded Fredo Corners and Angular Dimensions extensions, both working fine. Downloaded True Tangents_v3.0 but can't get it to install. What could be the problem?
Thank you. -
My TrueTangents should install OK in most SketchUp versions...
What are your steps, what are the error messages etc...
Are you looking it the correct menu location ?
It's menu Plugins [or Extensions - depending on SketchUp version] > Tangent-Tools... > a submenu of various tools... -
Hi TIG,
I downloaded it from the plugin store and moved it to my plugin folder (c:/program files (x86)/google/google SU8/plugins folder. Two files are now in the folder, True tangents.rb and True tangents_v3.0. Brought up SU8, windows, preferences, and True tangents not listed in preferences screen. -
True Tangent would not show in the Preferences dialog. Its a plugin so it will appear under the Plugins or Extensions menu depending on which version of Sketchup you are using.

When you get an extension from its RBZ file you leave it where you downloaded it - typically that's in your Downloads folder.
Now you have the RBZ you now need to install it into SketchUp...
In older SketchUp versions like v8 there's a tool under Preferences to extract the RBZ's contents and then save it into your Plugins folder.
Files in that folder auto-load as SketchUp starts...
In newer SketchUp versions it's a similar process, but you invoke it from Extensions Manager dialog's > Install... button - its exact menu location varies with SketchUp versions...In newer version the Extensions Manager can have a 'loading-policy' set - if using older 'unsigned' extensions you must set that to 'Unrestricted' to allow them to load...
PS: TrueTangents only installs one RB file into the Plugins folder - it has no subfolder or signing regime...
Do some tidying up before you fix it properly... -
Cleaned up and downloaded again. Opened SU8, then clicked windows, preferences and i get the preference box. I clicked on extensions and install extension came up, picked it and it showed me the rbz file i picked that but no extract but picked unzipper to plugins. Still nothing after closing and restarting SU8. Where is the tool under Preferences to extract the RBZ's contents and then save it into your Plugins folder?
Thanks for you patience. -
In v8 Preferences > Extensions... Install button in dialog, click and find the RBZ, select it and it then installs into Plugins folder for you.
The extraction of the RBZ files contents into the Plugins folder is done automatically...
The install button does everything for you...It sounds like you are doing it OK ??
Different extensions appear in different menus etc...
After you restart SketchUp True-Tangents should appear in the Plugins menu ???

Thank you TIG. Finally got it. It is in "plugins" menu in my SU 8 screen like you said. Did you choose to do it that way instead of a tool icon like the other two I installed I know this is mainly for architectural but I do mainly mechanical modeling where this extension will help a lot with accurate tangents points? Are the instructions in the program.
Thank you for your time and patience on this.

The default location for loaded extensions is the Plugins menu [renamed Extensions menu in newer SketchUp versions.
However it can become cluttered, and many authors choose other locations depending on what the tool does - favorites are Tools and Draw, but others can be under File and so on - but some are unexpected odd, e.g. my SectionCutFace only appears in the right-click context-menu if a single section-plane is selected...
You must read the Usage notes for each extension you install...TrueTangents has its own thread - http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=160780#p160780
where its usage is discussed - access it using the More Info... button in the PluginStore...
That page has a link to ttps://sketchucation.com/plugin/771-truetangents - its more detailed page at the PluginStore...
