Stiltsville Sunrise
-
Paying homage to an iconic place in South Florida. Stiltsville is a collection of houses in Biscayne Bay south of Miami. When I was growing up in the area years ago there were about 24 stilt houses scattered in the shallows south of Key Biscayne. I think six still remain....
Model is loosely based on one of them. Boat model out of 3D Warehouse. not too bad a model it did take some cleanup. But I've seen a lot worse . All the rest modeled by me. Rendered in Twilight, post pro Gimp.

How did you get the water to extend to the horizon?

Bryan, It's not too difficult to get the horizon relatively close. After creating a scene I will enter the "water group" , shoot a guideline with the protractor off in the direction of the horizon. I'll then copy that guide on blue axis to the eye height of the camera. Select the back edge of the water surface and move it towards where the two guides are intersecting. A little best guessing is involved, it may not be at the exact intersection of the guides but what looks good from the camera viewpoint. I think the length of the water towards the horizon ended up being around 8,000 feet. Might be a better way but this seems to work for me. One warning is don't size up the water plane until everything else is complete in the model. The clipping becomes horrible once you have such a big chunk of the ocean in place.

Thanks. Makes sense. Normal visual distance, for a 6ft person to the horizon on a flat plane is 3 miles, or approx 15,000ft.
