It's clear they are behind schedule for releasing the update.

SU2018 showed us the path; I wouldn't surprised if SU would be online only like https://www.vectary.com. In my modest believe SU needs to look + add functionalities like FORMIT (Autodesk) & VECTARY (see previous).

Furthermore being so behind there release window, I would have send my pre-financed base an sorry-email + timeframe for the SU2019 RELEASE. #iamnotabank #su2019

there is no release window and no periodic schedule assured as well as not providing a desktop version never announced, full stop.

it's done when it's done, as always.

This may or may not be true. I was sure that there was mention made, when the version labeling changed to incorporate a year indicator instead of a version number, that there will be annual major version updates. But I'm getting older and don't really have the time to read up / check on this, it will come to nought anyway. So it is what it is, we have to wait until a release is made.

However, the maintenance and support thing is wearing a little thin for long standing users, in my opinion anyway. There is very little support a user of say 3 years or more would need, but access to newer versions (both minor and major version releases) is what is sought by most.

Most "support" or problem resolution is done online on forums such as this as well as on SketchUp's own, mostly by other users who freely give their time and knowledge / experience. For 3rd party extensions this is a no-brainer, none of SketchUp's business; however there is bona fide SketchUp / LayOut questions asked by users that are more often than not resolved / answered by other users. There are a number of users that frequently help fellow users, you're probably recalling a few names / handles right now, on any number of issues.

I'm very grateful for these people as well as the programmers of the extensions (many free) tirelessly and relentlessly coding away on these extensions that helps to propel SketchUp and form an integral part of the SketchUp ecosystem for most.

I'm not saying that SketchUp doesn't provide support, obviously they do and within fairly reasonable turnaround times, but I've quite often seen people having difficulty either getting feedback (for whatever reason) or even getting into touch with support. We've been rather spoiled, in recent years, with rapid response times. More and more people expect a rapid response to their queries (whether this is good / bad or right / wrong is a completely different discussion) but this just serves to compound the experience.

Getting to the point, a predictable release date (within reason) without having to publicize it, is what we've grown to expect in recent years. Probably another thing we've been spoiled to.

Got on the sketchup website yesterday and talked with sales via online chat about upgrading/purchasing. I was informed that it was a good time to purchase before the price goes up in February...

Does anyone know if you buy a renewal before February, ahead of when your maintenance ends, let’s say in April. Do you get the extra time added or loose it?

Good question. You could always give it a trial run (don't hit the pay button) on the SketchUp licensing upgrade side of things. I've only ever visited those links after getting the notification (as to maintenance validity period) they send you in advance. Whenever I've upgraded / renewed previously the extra time was merely added, but they probably have checks & stops in place to prevent renewal too far in advance.

"Tip: Renewing early does not shorten the end date of the program. For example, say you initially enroll in the program on December 1, 2015, which expires November 30, 2016. If you renewed ten months later, your enrollment extends to November 30, 2017."

                              Is Sketchup dead?!?!
I have a feeling trimble has totally lost it's mojo. I am under the impression this once game changing software which has been supported and advanced by it's very users for decades is now being neglected... by its parents Trimble. Whilst Josh & Aaron and the basecamp seem to be keeping the software on life support, there seem very little new features or progression from the Trimble developers other than the format it is being sold in. With the killing of the 'Add location' feature by lack of resolution it could even be argued that we are in regression... feature wise. The new version is way overdue and as usual not a word from Trimble about what is upcoming. Maybe it is time for Trimble to find us some new parents who care for our software... it deserves to be developed by a crowd who puts more resources and enthusiasm into this project.

Open source Sketchup. Nice idea. Better core engine, modular, based on plugins, free and pay. Nothing to beat it. It is already close to that concept...except that someone is selling it.

Despite the early promise, I believe Trimble have a lack of direction for the program with the predicted integration into the Trimble software group not happening as far as I can see. While open source has its attraction, Trimble are a hard nosed, profit driven company and it is this that I see as the hurdle and bar for development.

Agreed! Trimble was around long before SU and this is NOT their money maker by any means. SU sales are probably a drop in the larger Trimble bucket. IIRC we were lead to believe that SU would be the base for Trimble's new BIM solution, correct? Time will tell and we'll see what happens.

I hope Sketchup gets a good update next release. I'm becoming very concerned about the futures of my 2 favorite CG packages. Sketchup and Thea Render. We get great software with a great community and active developers then the developers sell out to some company who is clearly profit driven and kill the very things that grow the user base like the free version of SU is no longer available in the form it was and it seems we can now kiss free updates to Thea good bye as the new company is adopting the same Trimble business model. Companies should really take a look at how 3DSmax hooks their user base giving away free versions to students who later swear by the product. Why suppress the free versions and updates that would only bring in a lot more users of which many will eventually buy a pro license like I did?

But I accept what I have for now. I bought a pro license for version 14 and got v.15 during that same cycle. But ever since I been holding out on getting newer versions because I can basically do everything I need with what I have so far (except UV mapping) and the newer features just didn't grab my $100. The only reason I'm considering an update is so I can use the newer versions of Profile builder in a pro version but it's not that serious because i do have v17 free. So my attitude is, I still love and use Sketchup versions I have so far and even if we do not ever get another update, I will continue to use what I have as long as it works. I just hope this community continues to be active.
