Paths are invalid............

I never touch file preference settings........but regardless I am now getting this pop-up at launch:
"One or more of your preferred file location paths are invalid. Please correct this by going to Sketchup's preferences > files and specify a valid path for any items shown in red." -
So what are the file paths shown in red?

Is Frankl your username? Does C:\Users\Frankl\Documents exist in Windows Explorer? Is it possible there was a name change for the folder or to your username?

yes, yes, no. the same paths are listed in skp 2015 on the same computer and i get no red hi-lighting there.

Have you tried to re-path each entry in turn by clicking the right icon against each to open a folder-browser ?
If you do that, then what happens ?When you installed SketchUp did you do it using the proper way ?
That is, by selecting the installer exe file's icon, right-click > context-menu and 'Run as administrator'.
Simply running it by double-clicking on its icon is not sufficient - even if your user-account has admin powers -it does not produce an equivalent installation.
Incorrect installation can result in a variety of weird errors - perhaps this is one ?If you have any doubt about how you did the installation - close SketchUp, then find the installer exe [or download a new copy], and do the 'Run as administrator' as outlined about.
When prompted choose to 'Repair' and the permissions etc should get corrected.
You should not lose any important settings or Extensions etc.Restart SketchUp and see what the situation is...

Started to re-install 2015 and 2016. but instead, i decided to install 2017 and delete the old programs. i totally dislike the trays, but it's better than the invalid path stuff. (please mr. trimble - give us the option to revert back to the 2015 toolbars, or at the least, enlarge the layer check boxes.)

oops....problem still remains. i need to drill down into this with TIG's administrator suggestion.

Installing SketchUp using 'Run as administrator' is not a mere suggestion, it is the correct way to do it.
If it's not installed in that way unexpected flakiness and other weird things are well documented.
It is the 'official' installation policy...
