Which skp file is really linked and shown in LayOut?
-
Hello All - Can anyone please help me?
I use SketchUp LO (v15) very rare and to be honest, I have no idea of it so far. Now I have to edit the file of a former colleague. From the placed Skup model, there are countless variations. I can open the file from Skup LO (Open With SketchUp) but the opened file is located somewhere in my roaming area and somehow renamed like this: 643420376_AutoSave_filename.skp. but not in the project´s directory itself. How can I find out which skp file is really linked and shown in LO?
I´ve done all the correction so far (namings and dimensionings etc.) but I´m not able to locate the Skp file itself or it´s directory location.I´m thankful for any tip

You have checked: file -> document setup -> references? That should show the references to the inserted files.
If the location is in some system location and not in a project folder, the original link to the folder (maybe due to a copy-paste action, or renaming of folders etc) is broken.
You might retrieve it by:
- copy the layout file somewhere
- rename the layout extension to zip
- extract the zip
- open the references.xml -> there you should find the original locations

The SKP file will be embedded in the LayOut file. You don't need to go through the gymnastics described by Kaas to get to it, though. Simply right click on one of the viewports and choose Edit in SketchUp. If the original isn't available because it's on the former colleague's computer, the embedded one will be opened.
If you think you'll need to edit the SKP file often and won't always want to open LO to get to it, use Save as... to save it to the desired directory. Then, in LO relink the SKP file to the one in the saved location.

Thank you both Dave and Kaas for your fast help!
Dave, could you please give me once more a little advice, how to proceed your described relinking within LO? I searched for such an option already but didn´t find it yet. (sorry again, I have no experience with LO so far but already recognized, that it´s worth to change that immediately)

To relink the SKP file to one saved outside of the .LayOut file, go to Window>Document SetUp>References. Select the SKP file from the list of references and then click on Relink at the bottom. Navigate to the saved SKP file and choose Open.

By the way, there's an interesting implication to this. Suppose your SketchUp template is set up with a series of scenes that you always use and you've created a LayOut project with those scenes as the viewports. You can quickly create a new LO doc for a new model by relinking to the new SKP file. Of course you'll use File>Save as... to save it so you don't overwrite the original.

...great! simply using the whole already done work of Project1 again for Project2 by relinking.
This LO thing seems to function similar to Adobe InDesign.Tank you for first aid today!
