I watched Pen and Teller's 'Tim's Vermeer' a few days ago and was amused to learn that Vermeer more than likely used mirrors in the creation of his paintings. Vermeer's work at the time was far more like a photograph than a painting so what does this mean. Was Vermeer a great technician rather than a great painter?

Watched this a few months ago, brilliant and plausible.

The amount of work that was done was mind boggling.

            Done ๐Ÿ˜„
            But what's the issue ?
To get perspective right artists have often used strings, grids, screens and even camera-obscuras ๐Ÿ˜’
Would you have them not use guide-lines and vanishing points etc ?

How else do you expect them to do it ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Some of us are old enough to be able to do this stuff long-hand to make a 3d image from a plan and elevations... and not need computers... ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Tig... I think to some that's difference between artist and draftsman, if they use aids or not. Myself, I think that anyone that can recreate realism is an artist, in any method they can. Like Tadema, I don't care what tools he uses, the man is an artist through and through. Myself? I'm a glorified draftsman.

David Hockney is a great artist. A pleasure to follow his thoughts.
Long before the use of optics, Dรผrer sketched this one.

It looks like it could be fun to use. The only problem I envisage is a sore back as you have to stay in a 'lean over' position while drawing / painting.

                            But, mike
we have digital photographs now, laptops, Ipads, etc etc
the only you need is a grid.
Or, you just need a projector, right?

Yes, you are right. digital photo apps can just about produce any effect you want but I like the idea of using a more manual process ..... just for the fun of it ๐Ÿ‘

It's not the tools that matter in the end, it's the "eye".

For musicians the "ear." The same for all the other arts.

Better tools just produce a better result for those with the talent, but the best tools in the world will never make anyone who is mediocre, great.
