Component auto text BUG ?
-
A strange thing happens with SketchUp Make 2014.
I made a Component named P1, it contain other components, when I apply a text on it I expect to get an auto text like 'P1' but I get the name of the internal component.
Does anyone have this problem? It's a Bug ?
In the 2013 version does not happen.
My OS is XP.
Thanks.

Ok, it seems that it is not a bug but a new feature introduced with 2014 version.
This feature is useful to name the nested components without exploding the parent component but is uncomfortable when I have to name the father components. See the image.
I need a plugin to solve this problem.
The plugin could be a simple check box on a toolbar with an inscription 'father'.
When the check box is selected, the text tool returns the name of the father component otherwise it returns the name of the son component.
What do you think?

I think it should cycle through the components you have beneath your mouse by pressing TAB for instance.
Then you could choose the son, the father, the grandfather and up until you can select Adam or Eve...
I nest and nest and nest them components and groups!
Otherwise this would be great if there was ruby to layout too...

My current suggestion is to add one or several edges, supperimposed on the edges of any child. These edges (when still ungrouped but inside the parent component) will let you autotext the parent component. You ad the edge once and have it work each time you need the parent text.
(you can delete the edge later if decired) -
Hello!
I've been using SU 2020 and having the same trouble... Can label all the child components, but the main one.
Wondering if there is a plugin or solution for it yet. Can anybody help with this? -

I've been using SU 2020 and having the same trouble...Probably the easiest thing would be to do the labeling in LayOut where you can select what level you want to identify.
In this example Bookstand is the top level, Top Easel Assembly is the next level down and Top easel panel is the lowest level.
