Packaging Design - Renderer?
-
Hey,
I am a graphic designer tasked with making some 3d mock up of pharmaceutical drug boxes. We have produced the design in AI and textured each panel of the box in SU.
I am using podium, but cant seem to get the lighting right, it either over exposes or becomes grey and lifeless. I want something as close to the general view in SU as possible. I dont need any shadows or anything fancy, just bold product design for my client.
any idea what i can do to make this better?
(I have used 3dsmax in the past and never had a problem setting up lighting, but podium lighting seems to over expose everything)
Thanks in advance for any help.

When I am setting up renders I put my studio photographer's hat on and thingk that way. I haven't used Podium for a very long time so I can't give you exact steps but I would put the package on a seamless background and make that background an emitter so it doesn't need to be entirely illuminated by the lights on the package. I'd also probably float the package off the ground by a very slight amount to get a slight shadow under the edge. Don't make the background emitter too bright. Just enough to kill most of the shadows from the package.
Two lights on the package should do with the one on the right slightly less powerful than the one on the left.

Seems you must ask some advices on the native Podium forum!

Firstly welcome to SCF.
I have a little experiance here, I did a ton of medication modeling a couple years ago for CVS pharmacy, in fact here is the iPad app that I did it for: http://www.cvs.com/mobile/onthego/ipad-app.html
I did a lot for the pharmacy renders and some stand alone which I'm not even sure if they were used as I do not have an iPad to find out.
Anyway, I used Sketchup and Thea4SU for all of it, I did use an HDRI for lighting as well as sunlight set on low and soft, I like the lighting from behind as that will give dimension and volume, this is just a rough render as I unfortunately cannot show original renders/images on open forum due to an NDA I have with them.

Thanks guys,
I will have a look at the podium forum and try and learn how to use the lighting.
Solo: That is the type of thing i am going for. This morning i have found an old file from a previous designer here which has also helped somewhat!
Cheers

DanIf you want, send me a model by pm and I'll see how it works on my side.

This would be also very quickly done in Photoshop if the packaging is generic items. There's tons of free product display actions out there.
