Questions on unlinking materials and light visibility

can I have a low resolution texture in sketchup that points to a high res texture that Vray uses at render time?
-
is there a trick for making my vray light planes render but not have them show up in my SU viewport?

yes to both.

You can add a diffuse layer under the first diffuse layer in the vray material, select your high-res texture in this second slot. In the first diffuse texture - change your transparency setting (click on the "m") to TexAlpha and change the color to white. This will keep the low-res material opaque in SU but transparent for vray.

there is a checkbox in the general settings to render hidden lights. Should be able to turn off lights and still have them render.

+1 on #1 I use this technique quite a lot. Once you make it, save it to a SKM file for future use!

awesome. Thanks for the help.
One more, in 3ds Max there's a Vray map called VrayEdgeTex which, among other things, can be placed in the Bump slot to produce rounded edges at render time. Is this somewhere within VfSU?

You're welcome!
No, rounded corner rendering is not available in vfs.

Bummer. It's odd that they would leave that out since it would be a much more valuable feature in SU than Max due to poly limits.

there was some sort of compatibility issue with it at some point in 1.49.01 development, and it was left out. I believe the issue was resolved, but we didn't have time to add it for 2.0. We have essentially doubled our developer staff in the past year, so we will be adding a lot of missing features in upcoming releases.

Thanks, that's very good to hear. I'm in a primarily SU -> 3ds Max/Vray environment but we're looking into using VfSU more as the feature set fills out. So far it looks like you've come a long way since 1.x in that regard. Keep up the good work.
