Help needed with faces
-
I'm a noob. Having a bit of trouble creating "face" for a complex roof shape. I'm sure that it's somehow not "coplanar", but it looks to be (from all angles and zoom levels). I've changed color scheme to show red/blue/green on all lines, but some are not along those axes, the house has an irregular shape, and the roof section is not "rectangular". Can't created a surface. Here are some questions:
I like using guidlines, but it seems like it would be better in this case to use "guideplanes". Is there such a thing in SU? I suppose I could create several guidlines, and somehow make them resident in the same plane, but this is complicated. There must be some tip on making coplanar faces easily (?).
Thanks

Do not know about "guideplanes" ... but if you post a sketch or the model, I'm sure someone can help you.

Once you have face at the correct plane, you can use the inference "on face" to draw more. Hover the cursor (hold without button) over the face until you see prompt "on face" then press shift key to begin drawing. Or if you start a line, move to the face and hover, press shift then move where you want the line.
You can also copy a face and move it in the same plane easily, or take an edge of that face and extend it in the same plane.
I take you have drawn an outline that is not coplanar. You should be able to establish that plane in portion, e.g. a simple triangular area that you know has correct boundaries--then work out from there.

Hi Sundad, hi folks.
Attach your skp file to a post for us to see and diagnose the problem.
Just ideas.

Guide planes aren't mentioned as such in SketchUp. But any face in SketchUp could be considered and used as a guide plane.
Example: with the 'Line' tool start drawing a new edge on just some face, (doesn't matter where you start, on edge or corner or on the face itself), hover over that face till you see 'On Face' popping up. Now press and hold down [Shift], to constrain to the plane of that face. Anywhere you go with the tool to finish the edge with the second endpoint will be in the plane of the face. Even at some location outside the face's boudaries. This can be useful when creating complex roof shapes. As suggested, upload the file with what you already have and explain where you want to go as for the roof shape.

Thanks to all for your answers, I will try some of your suggestions, and then get back to you with results.

Hi
For complex roof plan, first make a face of the common pitching point (fascia line) then offset a given known distance, then select the inner plane and auto-fold the correct height to make all the hips, valleys, then use the methods outlined above
this is for a roof with all the same pitch
