      Good morning from Michigan, USA.

I'm embarrassed to ask what seems to be so basic to everyone in this forum, and throughout the Sketchup internet community, but what is rendering and how is it done?

From what I've read, it appears to be a process of turning a drawing into an almost photograph. Am I close?

For someone who has never done "renderings," where might I look for a fundamental tutorial? It looks like it's something that requires additional software. Are there suggestions for simple, inexpensive options to explore rendering?

      Thank you

Rendering is taking light bounces and turning them into pixels.

You need 3 basic things for a render to work. A camera, an object and a light.

All software uses these three things to build a picture.

Your camera shoots a ray of light into the scene, it hits an object which then bounces to the light source and a pixel is drawn.

If the shot ray lands in an area of shadow the ray cannot bounce to the light so a shadow is drawn.

That is the basic pricnciple of how rendering works. (The exact opposite of how real life is)

Your choice of software is large so I suggest you trial the most popular.

TwiLight, Podium and LightUp and great starting points

Maybe 3 lights will be more generic! πŸ€“

And see this article that i had translated (based on Su Podium but valuable for any render! πŸ˜‰
