Using glue to with components
-
When creating components I chose "None" for the "glue to" selection in the create component dialod box. Is there a method for changing the glue method after the component has been created and placed in a model?
Thank you for your help,Bob

Hi Bob,
yes there are ways to do this. Have a look at this tutorial - some parts at the bottom tell about editing the component and changing the axes.

What if I do an Edit in place with the component from the model. Explode the component while in the Edit in place mode. Then create a component with a new name and the required changes and return it back to it original location in the model? Would that work?

Bob, if you explode the component and remake it, it becomes a different component. It's like you're making any other new component. You don't need to explode it to make the changes. If you do, keep in mind you'll only be affecting the one component you're working on. Any other copies of the original will be unaffected because exploding the one component obviously breaks it's relationship with the others. Also, you may fine that the geometry in your component gets welded to other geometry if you have any other ungrouped/uncomponented geometry in contact with it.

I have reviewed all the imformation provided and fail to see anything that indicates how to change the "Glue to" condition from "none" and make it possible to select horizontal, vertical, any or sloped glue to condition. I understand that having the correct axes oriantation is required; but also assigning a glue to condition to the component is also required. The "Glue to" selection for all the components in the model is "None". The components in the model are not glued to any other component in the model. This, to me at least, is a very complex model in which I have placed alot of time both designing the house and ceeating the model and I really do not wish rebuild the model. There are so many other edit conditions in SU; why is there not a procedure for editing "Glue to"? I have four books on how to use Sketchup, including "The missing manual" and found nothing in any of them on how to edit "Glue To" condition. I try not going to the forums except as a last resort because I know how important time is to everyone.
Thank you again for your help, Bob

Bob, check your PMs.

Bob,
I'm not sure if this workaround means anything to your situation, but if you make a new component while inside of an old component (which has no "glue to" option) and select the "glue to" option, you get exactly the same component (means it contains the same entities) and the same axis orientation; but the catch is that you get different location for the origin of axis. Here is how;
- Get inside of the component by double-clicking it.
- Select all entities, make them a new component with "glue to" option selected and specified.
- If you don't like the new origin of axis, change it.
- If you like the new component, get outside of the original component (which now has a new component inside), open component panel (Components dialog box) from the menu, globally replace the old components with new one you just created (tips in the following URL).
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/select-and-replace-components-in-google-sketchup.html - In the end, you get the same result as if you added "glue to" option to all existing components... I think.
Hope this little tut helps.

The components browser lets you change properties to 'Glue to' etc. This is for instances not yet in the model. Existing 'In Model' unglued instances will not change their current unglued situation. Not that useful to you, I guess.
Try both next plugins. I'm not sure if ThomThom's plugin does that job to components in the model, but if I'm not mistaken, TIG's plugin changes unglued instances in use. I don't have them installed.ThomThomās Component properties plugin:
