Could you post a screen shot of the components window showing the door component thumbnails?

If you go to Preferences>Files where does it tell you that components are being saved?

        Dave R,

Snip of component browser and windows folder which Sketchup agrees holds all the component files indicated in the browser.

        Component file address:

        C:\Users\Nick G\Documents\

This is I guess wrong? Documents does not exist, My Documents does.

So this should be set to the full path of the folder storing relevant components?

        Thanks for your generous help.

Quick thought: I had been making/getting hold of these components and then dropping them into the folder. Not sucking them up inside Sketchup.

Another thought: Just made a new component and sucked it up inside Sketchup (using right click "save as" into the component folder)and it is not listed in the Windows folder, although it is in the browser when a new blank drawing is started.

        Cheers

        Nick

I was hoping your second image would show the entire path. Maybe we could take a look at this together and get you sorted. I'll send you a PM.

            Dave R,

I have to go out for a while.

Once again thanks for your offer. I have just seen the PM.

I am in Brisbane Australia BTW.

I was not able to get windows to reveal all like how the older versions did. I tried all the settings I could find. Even changing to the Windows 2000 theme.

In the interim I have a screen shot of where Sketchup is going looking. See how the file icon/button from the preferences dialogue is greyed out. Maybe this is part of the problem?

            Have to fly...

            Cheers

            Nick

Nick, it looks like the folder might be hidden or you haven't got full rights to it.

I'll just add one thing before I really get yelled at. 😄

                Should have explained this.

The top file is the one that can not be seen when looking in Windows directory.

And it has the greyed out icon.

                ?

                Thanks

Fix the folder permissions for the main SketchUp Components folder to 'FULL' [AND also the Materials, Styles and Plugins folders which should also have 'FULL' permissions!]...

As an Admin [if you are not one change your abilities in the Users Control Panel]

Select the folder's icon in the Windows Explorer window for the main SketchUp folder...
                  Right-click
                  Context-menu
                  Properties dialog
                  Security tab
                  Edit button...
Set each of the listed items [users/groups] to have FULL Read/Write permissions
                  Apply/OK

Also find the 'SketchUp.exe' file in the SketchUp folder, and in its ..Properties > Compatibility tab dialog, set it ticked to 'Always Run This Application as Administrator'...

                  Now retry...

                    Hello everyone,

                    Not really getting anywhere.

                    Very frustrating.

Few shots so you can see what is going on.

                    Folder settings.
                    settings.JPG

What happens when skp.exe is NOT the admin. This is skp saving form the 'save as' function. Right click context menu. This is what I expect to see from the Windows file browser. No padlocks please. FO.
when skpexe is NOT the admin.JPG

UAC: it is just me. I see that I am "user" and the "admin".
                    UAC.JPG

This is what really hits me. I get these silly icons on desktop shortcuts. Sometimes they are padlocks, sometimes they're an atlas, now there a printer.
                    shortcuts get silly icons.JPG

                    <sigh>

I am upgrading to pro next week. Like to get this sorted.

Can I reset the permissions to their default settings?

                    Cheers

                    Nick

                      Dave,

I sent you a PM, two actually.

They seem to be stuck in the "outbox", I have nothing in "sent".

Would you mind looking? The messages appear to be prepared to be sent, but are not allowed.

Is there a trick, Am I missing something?

                      Cheers

                      Nick

                        FYI
PMs will remain in your Outbox until the recipient reads them, then they go into the Sent folder.
That way you know when it's not been read yet... remember other members have to sleep, eat and shop etc, and can be in significantly different time-zones from you, so you cannot always expect an instant response...

                        Back to the issue...

In Context-menu > Properties > Security... for the selected 'Components' folder [and for the Plugins, Materials and Styles folders next...]
                        Edit & Apply
Set Read/Write permissions to FULL for everyone that you can.
                        Then use...
                        Advanced>Owner
Set the owner of the folder to be 'admin', also ensure the changes filter down to change all contents to match [there is a check-box].
Do not have it set for the folder you are changing to take its permissions from its containing folder [SketchUp~] as this will confuse things...

Also set 'SketchUp.exe' to 'always run as administrator' in Properties > Compatibility...
