      Hi,

I have just started to use Artisan and thought I would follow the thread on here and try to work through some of the basic shapes to get my head around the tools and functionality.

I have done a quick test of a mug and everytime I apply 'subdivide and smooth' my mug looks like it has suffered a small degree of fire damage πŸ˜†

I undertsand this will purely be down to myself and the way I have modelled the mug, but was hoping someone could give me a few pointers to why I am encountering the problems that I am - That way I can learn a bit more about the tool.

      Thanks,

      James

Triangulate or Quad the face where the handle meets the cup.

If you can upload the .skp it'd help

Next time is better to do a new post jbomb instead of editing the previous one. So Rich can see that you've added the model (with new posts the icon of the thread will turn to red in the index).

            Thanks for the advice.
I hadn't actually made any changes to the model just added it to the thread but I will note for next time - thanks πŸ˜„

Also use Remove Inner Faces plugin.

You have inner faces that cause strange behaviour too.

Look where top of handle meets the cup. Before and after inner faces removed.

I haven't quad/triangulated the face yet, just showing how inner faces cause problems.

Now to make it more round. More loops make it more rectilinear....how would you go about it Rich? I continued loop all way round which is causing squareness.

Or maybe start off with an equal sided Ngon, like a hexagon, so it can split into two quads.

Thanks Oli, I think that all makes sense. It seems that it is the little details that turn this tool into something really powerful.

I brought my handle from a planar face. In Rich's example you can maintain a better curve by bringing the handle from an edge. This was racking my brain for a while! Because every time I triangulated the face where handle meets cup, it became flat. Anyway here are couple other ways.

Thank you for the models guys - It makes a lot more sense now.
Still finding a few issues but I think I just need to try things and learn from my mistakes.
