Stupid problem with xfrog trees
-
i've made a stupid mistake buying two xfrog libraries. i bought them in the 3DS max format because i thought it's the same like .3DS . now i can't open the models in maxwell as it only opens .3ds formats.
i just installed the test version of 3ds max to convert the .max files into .3ds. the problem now is, when i convert them it don't convert the layers on the file and i get a .3ds file which only has one layer where i can't put different textures on.
is there a way to convert the files with the layers? or is there a simpler way to get the .max files into maxwell studio? -
Have you contacted Greenworks and checked if you can replace the package?

I´ve contacted them days ago and didn't get any answer. i guess the problem will be that there was a discount on the .max format which isn't on the .3ds ones.

Carloh,
seems that xfrog trees in 3d max format come as one single object with a multi sub-object material applied by material ID, I don´t know if that is compatible with Maxwell render...
probably one solution is to separate every part of the tree by material ID in different objects and then assign single materials to those objects, then export to .3ds format...
but as thomthom suggest, better contact them to see if possible to change the libraries for the .3ds version...best

I use the script detachbyID to "split" into different materials in Max.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fs7n8knicej8wqk/detachbyID.msIn Max choose run script and find detachbyID.
Choose MaterialName.
Then detach. -
thank you guys, i'll give your approaches a try.
nevertheless i still hope that the support will give me an answer that i should pay the difference between the discount price of the max format and the regular of the 3ds format.
that was definetly an once in a lifetime mistake

Since you have Maxwell, just install the Maxwell plugin for 3DSMAX (it's free after all) and export the trees as MXS files -- which you can then either open in Maxwell Studio -or- place directly into SketchUp using the MXS referencing capabilities of the latest Maxwell/SketchUp plugin.
Best,
Jason. -
woooohoooo...the solution was that near! thank you very much jason! you're my hero of the day!

As a side note, I would suggest getting Onyx Tree for making trees. Especially if you want a hi-poly version for MXS and then export a very low poly version for SKP or even better, it will export shaded TGA which you can turn into a PNG file to save even more memory in SU. Using the new MXS reference feature it kicks serious butt. The Onyx program, although it looks dated is very powerful, will let you create tons of custom trees and shrubs and they export in 3DS, OBJ, FBX and other formats. Well worth the money. I think it was like $150 for the Broadleaf program and I feel like I have already created well over $150 in tree models. Highly recommended for sure for all SketchUpers.
