I Use AdBlock For a Reason
-
I also use AdBlock.
My default is 'on' to block ads on all sites.
However, it is very easily switched 'off' for selected sites [a one off click].
You must be aware that many 'community' sites, like SCF, rely on modest advertising revenue to pay for essentials. The servers, support etc are not free. Advertisers will not continue to invest if they think that their ads are not arriving at their target audience...
You get free use of sites like SCF - taking knowledge, advice, plugins etc - all you have to do in return is turn AdBlock 'off' [just once]. After all the SCF ads are all tailored to Sketchup users - CAD/Addons/Rendering/3dPrinting etc, so from time to time you might even find one of them to be useful to you and follow its link, to learn something else to your advantage... -
Disabling AdBlock for SCF may not be enough. I also have the Ghostery plugin for Firefox (it allows control of tracking cookies) I found that had to be disabled too. There may be others as well.

Guys, it is NOT cool that you have blocked those of us who choose to use Adblock from viewing content in posts.
Hi John,
TIG has outlined very well the reasons we have implemented the Anti AdBlock measures so I won't elaborate. However when one thinks about it, we have not 'blocked' anyone, its through the use of AdBlock that folks are 'blocking' themselves.

If you are using Chrome and disable AdBlock and still have a problem you might need to check your 'do not track' plugin http://download.cnet.com/DoNotTrackMe-for-Chrome/3000-2144_4-75653397.html also, I had to disable it to see content.

That's the kind of cringe-worthy reasoning that we expect from a politician, Mike. It is not worthy of you - I know that you can do better.
I was never in any doubt why you had done this, and I'm well aware that I can alter AdBlock's settings to just allow adverts here, but I think that it should be the user's choice to opt in to receiving the adverts or not.

John, I always enjoy mixing words with you .... you don't spare me!
'Choices' normally cost! The whole thing is a simple matter of economics ..... errrr ...... starting to sound like a politician again However that is part of my roll here and has been for some time.
We operate SketchUcation 24/7/365 and cater for over 155K+ membership. In terms of man hours, while we have never calculated the weekly input from the management and moderators also the top sketchucators, I imagine it runs into many hundreds of hours per week.
On top of this we have increased services to Standard Members and now Premium Members and continue to do so week in, week out. For example our new Lenovo Affinity Deal which will offer good discounts to our Premium Members.
Our prime source of operating revenue has and continues to be advert revenue although Premium Membership sign-ups of late are also helping to keep the show on the road ...... I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank those that have supported us by taking up Premium Membership.
AdBlock has been seriously effecting the banner advertising impact. While banner 'impressions' have been increasing, in many cases (over 50% from my research / calculation) these are just ghost impressions as Ad Block is being used, so no benefit to our support advertisers and not fair to them either. Most of them are small operations.
We took the decision to create an 'anti' Ad Block system simply to offer better advertising services to our advertisers thus increasing their CTRs and in turn their opportunities to make product sales. We also trust this move will generate better value to our advertisers and in turn they will stick with us.
John, if you can come up with another realistic way for SketchUcation to operate at its current level that doesn't involve banner advertising, I am all ears
Mike

One-Line adverts distract me more then the banners. I hate reading a thread and tripping over a completely unrelated message.
Just installed AdBlock to see what it is all about. Those polite requests are too ...well.. saturated?
-
Hi Tomaz, If you mean 'saturated' as in a lot of colour, maybe we could look into that.

it's there though.. when i look for it.
otherwise, I'm usually only looking for the reply button or the next page button..[edit] ok.. i get what happened in that thread you linked to ... the OP was replying to Ad Machine..
i'm a bit slow today.. -
I nay care but I wish SUcation would ban flashing ads. Also the site is quite slow now. Is that related to the ads?
-
What sort of tool would I use for vertices in SketchUp? I want to take control!
Is there some sort of discount?
-
peter.. maybe you have the Siri version of scf?
-
That's Thomthom's Vertex Tools and as a Premium member you get 20% off the price.
When you visit the shop anything you buy is automatically discounted or free.

This new anti adblock rule will greatly reduce my web experience, thanks to sketchucation... have to say I did not expect this happening.
I have no issues disabling ABP at sketchucation, but the problem is that ads are pushed from buysellads.com, that's scrips I want to stop running on other sites with NoScript.
I don't see a easy way (nor a time to bother circumvent anti-adblock) to allow buysellads.com scrips so that I could stop they scripts at other sites. I sincerely hope that you find a way to enable anti-adblock measures that do not affect my general web experience, until that I rather block buysellads.com and perhaps result a decreased experience - just make those anti-adblock messages not so annoying, there really no need for that.Honestly, you could implement ads that are stored on site and not pushed from third party site. Also AdBlockPlus has acceptable ads policy http://adblockplus.org/en/acceptable-ads
I guess, buysellads.com does not follow that... nor does sketchucation then. Those that ask Thea or Kerkythea questions with images, please wist at they sites for help.

while i do think advertising is getting smarter and more targeted etc.. it's not quite there yet..
Ad Machine should recognize i've already bought vertex tools therefore, he better be onehelluva salesbot to sell it to me again. -

I agree with you and will discuss this with the advertisers that are using them. I think there not many though! Also 'flashing' ads can annoy and result in a negative feeling towards the product / service. I have no problem to nicely made animated gifs that are 'relaxing'
