Walt, my 102 is still sitting here on my desk and I've been thinking about how to model that cap iron, too. Except for the name on it it is symmetrical laterally. So I would only model half of it. I would leave the D-shaped opening out until after you get the shape made.

Draw the centerline curve and the edge curve. I think you'll also need some curves from the centerline to the outside edge to get that swollen look.

Compared to the photo, the cap iron on mine sure needs a good polishing job.

So what is this cap iron, guys (beside the obvious - I can see what it looks like in the picture)

The cap iron is the shiny domed piece on this block plane. It holds the plane iron (blade) in place.

...and because it's such a small plane that part is made 'rounded', so that it doubles as a comfortable handle or grip when it's being 'pushed' - unlike on a larger plane, which will have separate handles/knobs and a 'flatter' metal-plate which will do the 'holding' of the blade...

Good addition, TIG. This plane is only about 13 cm long so the dome fits nicely into the palm of the hand and you push it with the heel of your hand.

                    Walt,
Perhaps my attempt might help if you still need ideas on the curviloft lines that Dave describes (Kudos to Fredo!). I had most luck with the top section. You have to look at your plane and decide what curves will work for you. Mine isn't like any plane in existence I'm sure. I was just winging it. I made surfaces in whatever groups of curves that I could. I spent much time reshaping and scaling after, (and still bumpy 😒 ).Screen shot 2012-11-13 at 9.51.21 AM.png

I am happier with the result of Artisan and it was much faster, though I still spent a lot of time shaping after with artisan and vertex tools (all hail Whaat & ThomThom!). With more work on the proxy, it could come out better to start with.Screen shot 2012-11-13 at 1.28.26 AM.png
