Hey guys is their a modifier button to stop a plane folding (triangulating) when it is being manipulated ?

How are you maniuplating it? Which tools? Could you show an example of what you're trying to do?

For example if i move one edge of a tapering rectangle it splits and folds i want the geometry to remain planar.

            Pictures, man. Pictures. ๐Ÿ˜‰

            That's a rather vague description.

It sounds to me as if you might be using the wrong tool. Perhaps you should be using Rotate instead of Move. Are you selecting an edge to use with the Move tool? Or are you selecting an endpoint? If you keep the edges of the face on the same plane it won't get subdivided into triangles.

Yes the move tool on an edge, thanks for the rotate tool tip i'll give it a try.I just thought i'd read about a modifier key which kept planes from folding somewhere.

Unfortunately it's the contrary: there is a modifier key (Alt) to force autofold nut none will prevent.

Thanks Gaieus & dave that was most probably what i had misinterpreted. Plus i expect moving edges is a geometric impossibility without folding. I am working with someone using Rhino and it just doesn't do the folding thing at all he moves edges at will hmmm.

When you move an edge but the resulting geometry will also remain co-planar, the autofold edges appear while moving but automatically disappear after you finish the move operation. Certainly the very first condition: the resulting face has to (also) be co-planar, needs to be met.

I've seen this Gaieus it appears and dissapears but i think this is only the case with square parallel geometry.

I might be wrong, but I believe rhino actually does fold geometry and add hidden creases, it just doesn't like to them to you. That's how it can make a very smooth looking flowing 3d surface and make it look like its made of squares when in fact its made of triangles. It just on;y shows the square outlines. I could be wrong.

If he's trying to keep the face planar there should be no triangulation. That only happens when you make it non-planar.

I'm still not exactly sure what the geometry and deformation he's talking about though. It'd be nice to see screenshots or a sample model.
