Something is making extra copies of components in my file
-
I have been working on a very large and messy file (actually a set of messy files that will be combined into a master model). In at least two of the files I have discovered 30+ identical copies of one of my components (only with the new name SKP2D_1,2,3... etc)in the same location, way way off from the origin and the rest of the model. I've been having issues with plugins and have recently deleted all of them and started fresh. But this appears to have happened again. The plugins i have been using with it are 'extrude edges by vector', 'drop at intersection' and 'copy along path'. The files also bug splat nearly every time I try to drape, even with simple stuff.
The file was originally modeled in a combination of rhino and inRoads, so it can be unwieldy at times, even with basic commands.
Has someone else encountered this?

Is the component one you need?
What happens if you delete the unwanted ones from the model space and then purge unused components? Do they come back?
-
I do need the original components (they are landforms modeled in another software), and for now I've deleted the extras and purged with no catastrophic results.
Hopefully they don't come back, but since its happened in 2 files with completely different components, I'm trying to get the bottom of this before it happens again. Thanks!

Have you run Model Info > Statistics > Fix Problems...
Any messages? When you find these rogue instances 'far away' are they in the context of something else like another component or group ?
Where is the 'origin' in these problem components? [Model Info > Components > Show Axes] Is it miles from the geometry?
How about the problem component's 'bounds' is it excessive - e.g. there's some bit of geometry miles off ? -
So fix problems didn't find anything. But I few times I have gotten a message when saying saying that something minor is messed up and sketchup will fix it.
The rogue components aren't anywhere near other groups or components, which is why I didn't see them pop up at first. The component origins are close to the geometry, and there aren't any pieces of things in the component (that I can see at least) out in the distance. However, the model is miles(literally) away from the origin point in sketchup (due to the need to maintain the origin from CAD.

Placing the model's geometry miles from the SKP origin will surely cause issues.
If you have CAD data imported then switch all visible/layers-on and unlocked... and move everything a know amount nearer to the origin X,Y [note it down - you can use it later to move new updated imports into place too...]
If you have CAD blocks made into components you might also have components with very remote insertion-points/axes relative to their geometry... so there could be nested objects appearing weirdly...
