For textures on sphere
Try UV Tool by Whaatelse for curvated surfaces

Try this:
Inside SketchUp Go to Help /Online Help Center. Type in Search: "Make a Sphere". you'll find this:http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=39024
Good to learn. Or just go to Google Warehouse Search "Sphere" if you are really lazy.
Help / Online Help Center: Type in Search: "Texture a sphere". You'll find this:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=681&start=0
(Gai's first comment: "that is quite a difficult job"...)
(I did not know Sketchucation topics show in the Help Center.)
Also you can search there for "apply texture to uneven surface" (or similar phrase, unfortunately bended is not a word). Look over the results:

You can surf on from there--but spheres are still more difficult, because...you know.
Come back here for more once you've tried it out. Good luck!
[Edit: or get Pilou to explain once again!--but I am noting another technique: Online help center is pretty good for basics]

I had the same question on spheres recently in thread "Curves". I also had problem to do a sphere, but as Pilou helped, it is important to start your circle in the center of blue axis. Otherwise it will not work.
You also need know how to increase number of sides of the circle, standard one has 24 sides. Before you start drawing you time e.g. 60 and press enter. In Measurements box you will see the new number of sides for circle tool.

This isn't true. You can draw a sphere anywhere. It does not have to be on the blue axis

This is also not true. You do not need to increase the number of sides from the default 24 to 60 or any other high number to make a sphere.

You can draw your own sphere with the Follow me tool
with different behaviours
here one
incease your number of segments / circle or arc circle following that you want
maybe max is 100Click the circle call the Followme tool then click the surface
by Driven
My result

Of course number of segment of Circle / arc Circle can be anything!
When you draw your Arc-circle use the Inference snapping points for help!
For a "true sphere" Circle and Arc-circle must have the same number of segments -
Of sure, that if you want to have a good look of sphere you need to increase segments number. But the more segments, the more faces, and program then runs slowly... depending on what you do.

If you make a component of one sphere and copy it that's run speed!
With 24 segments you have yet a very cool sphere! -

With 24 segments you have yet a very cool sphere!I tried 2 spheres with 60 segments (one bigger, second one smaller and intersected) and made some component joining with Follow edges from LSS toolbar. But that was unable to finish that task (it stucked at 7%). Then I took only the little sphere and joined with some objects and it was faster, but still took few minutes. I cannot to send file because the att. is 4 MB.

Use http://www.sendfiles.org/ and send the adress resulting

But 60 segments is not reasonnable for make some try with plugin under beta session!
12 segments is sufficient for this sort of sport!
And why not in V6 : i can't reload it! -
So your works remember me this guy Orgelf here
Maybe you can also use Line2Tubes by Didier Bur
will be in the Menu Tool: Convert arc, circle, curve, line in cylinder :
precision = number of segment section so 4 = a box, 12 = tube(a bit slow on my 10 years old computer
You have some wood textures in the native Paint Tool
But texture at this size is quasi the same than a color

Line2tubes is great plugin. I look forward to test it. Will save a lot of work.

ok but how to remove spaces

I believe Nikola and me could use this plug-in for painting, texturing, not just spheres:

Post an SKP File (Menu File/ save as V6)
It's impossible to answer with only an image! (so many possibilities !
And how and what are you doing ? What function...Yes True Paint by Fredo6 is fabulous for replace the native Texture Tools!

I've just used circle + line2tubes as you recommended. This was just try with the plugin I just downloaded, but I see it creates spaces when you try to make tube from circle.
