Trimble Version
-
First of all, I hate the new logo... this is the first step Trimble made to mark their ownership over SketchUp and was a wrong one. This is all they can?? a crappy red... stair-like cube? I'm wondering what will happen with the application itself... I'm afraid that SketchUp as we know it, will die.
I embrace change, but only if it goes up... any degradation is not to be desired. If Trimble team reads SketchUcation forum and pays attention to users needs, please respond, in this way we will know that you are here.
Anyway ... there is SketchUp 8 M3 ... if future versions will be as crappy as the new logo.
P.S. - please repair your mistake: make a logo contest here, on forum!

A logo is very subjective - you can hardly project that to the technical capabilities of the application.@unknownuser said:

Have are there - they have been posting from time to time as they always been.

Dereeei, you are wrong here. Of course, you may have your own opinion on the logo but it was not a trimble design/decision but was designed "in-house" at the SU Team. In fact, the SU logo used to be different before Google times, too, and the small house icon came with Google (and interestingly, some older users of SU hated that logo as much as you hate this one now - and mostly (also) for sentimental reasons IMO but only they can tell).
Now as for SU development under Google and under Trimble: in Google times, they were only a "department" of Google and actually belonged to the mapping "super-department" - which had a lot of consequences regarding the direction(s) of development.
Now they are (or seem to be at lest?) more "independent" and can decide more on the development areas (although probably there will be some expectations - i.e. some "bridges" with existing Trimble products/hardware).
All in all, I am optimistic. A logo is just a logo and I would not attribute that much of an importance to it (although it may still be relevant in marketing terms - which of course I have no clue about).

So... What's new in the latest release? I can't find any release notes, or perhaps I'm just being particularly dense.

As a user from v4. I HATED the Google house logo. To me it looks like and image from a child's coloring book. As a designer, I can see where it reflected the simplicity inherent in using SU, and how it tied with other Google logos. Therefore was an appropriate choice.
To me, the new logo reflects the simple flatness that I see as the current trend. It marks the image as "modern" (MS has gone the same route, as have so many other companies) and part of the "now" look. A look where 3d accents/shadows etc, have become passe and unnecessary. (Even for 3D software) Granted, I like Marian's version much better, but that could be because I'm still so 2009. Will see how it looks on a 30" monitor.
I will give in and update with a sigh. I am skeptical--as always--that the match of SU and Trimble may not prove advantageous to me and how I use SU. (I am a daily user) Oddly enough, I was unaware of the SU sale and only discovered it visiting the forum today. I actually came here today to ask for comparisons of SU vs Rhino. Don't answer that here. I'll post a separate thread.

Wondering how & when Trimble will get Sketchup out of Google install directory.
All S/W, plugins ref this.
Just wondering. Every install will always start with Google. -
This was just an incremental, "maintenance" release so they could not get it out of the Google folder (it would not have overwritten in that case but install separately).
-
Expect it to be next major release - version 9.,
-
yeah... but don't expect it any time very soon.

All S/W, plugins ref this.If a plugin does reference a hard-coded path, then that is plain poor programming practice.
The API gives us methods to return the actual and REAL paths. (Even now a user can choose to install the application in a custom path.)
But yes there will be some plugins that will break, because the author did not write them correctly. But there should be plenty of time of authors to check their code before v9 is released.

its a maintenance / rebranding release.
i want sketchup to make me coffee and do my drawings for me while i go for a bike ride.
hasn't happened yet, and while i am on the pro version, i don't think there is a large enough upgrade cost to make that happen. -
