When I draw a rectangle and push/pull it up, it's a solid block. Cutting an opening in it gives me an opening through the block. However, when I put a window component in it, I can see through the window into the block as though the block is an open space. Know what I mean? Can anyone explain the theory of why this is to me? Thanks!

        Rose,

Perhaps a screenshot or file would help. We don't know what you expect (or want) or exactly what you are seeing. We also don't know what component you are using. Components per se don't affect other geometry in the model, but you may have made or dl'd a "cutting" component (a component set to cut a hole in a face). These only cut a hole in one face, though there are plugins or specially made components that help in cutting two faces for a window-in-wall effect. My guess is you are only getting cutting on one face, which is expected with basic methods. A search of your posts shows you've already read relevant threads on this topic, so I don't know if my guess is any good.

Long way to say, "More information please"...

          Hi, Rose:
From your description I am interpreting that you are wondering why the block has no substance within--it is hollow? If this is what you mean, then the answer is that Sketchup is a surface modeler, not a true solid modeler. It only maps the faces of the objects being modeled. If this is not what you mean, then never mind.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

Thanks for the responses! To clarify, I drew a rectangle, then push/pulled it into a block. Then I cut a simple hole in it. Looking through the hole, the figure is "stuck" inside the solid block; i just see her upper half..

I erased the hole and replaced it with a window component. Looking inside the window, I now see a room-like space and the whole figure; she's not stuck in a block.

What is the explanation for this?

              She still looks sad...

              but yes that looks right.

You have a 6-sided box. Each side is a face of zero thickness. Sketchup is all faces and edges. There is no solidity in the modelling like some programs. The push-pull tool creates faces along the sides of the path you are pushing the face , so if you go through a cube it makes a donut shape. If you then erase even just the rectangle lines on one side, the lack of those edges will remove the sides you created inside the box and will heal the hole that was on that face.

Then you stuck on a window component that is set to "cutting". It creates a hole in the face, and if the window texture is set to transparent you can "see" into the box. You can move the window and it will take the hole with it.

lol about her looking sad. 😄 thx for the explanation about the faces -i do understand it conceptually. i just find it odd that when i cut a hole with a non-component, i see a solid block instead of a space. of course, i'm not sure what else it should look like...

You have not 'cut a hole', but rather you have pushpulled the rectangle through the space to the other side and thereby left the four reveals, as should be expected.
This is how you form a 'hole' through an object, or make a 'recess' with reveals.
If you want to make a hole in just one face then simply select the rectangle's face and press delete.
The hole is then formed with no reveals.
                  You are over thinking this.
Both ways have different results - choose the one you want and use it...
