I'm just getting back to SU8 after a year away. And suddenly the simplest tasks don't seem to be in my grasp anymore.

      Importing, for instance.

I've tried importing a JPEG (accessible by many other programs on my MacBook Pro OS 10.7). No luck.

And why not be completely silly . . . I've tried to download and import a SolidWorks creation, also without luck. I have already downloaded and installed STL for SU. But the SolidWorks "wideline.SLDPRT" isn't even recognized.

Is there somewhere I can go to refresh (okay, probably really learn for the first time) about importing?

      Your help is appreciated!

What do you mean by "no luck" importing a JPEG? That can certainly be done. You can import the file as an image, a texture or as a Match Photo image.

For Solidworks models I've read that you can import to SU via MOI.

True. "No luck" is rather vague. Like I had "no luck" with that pretty girl the other day - but if I want to be honest to myself, there are reasons. My beer belly, my greying hair, my stinking armpit... and last but not least, my wife was also there. πŸ˜’

So if you give any details what that "no luck" means, we may be able to help. Otherwise you also need to look into yourself.

I am known far and wide for less-than-clear verbiage. Let me try again. I have an accessible (to other programs) JPEG on my computer. But when I go into SU8 | File | Import, and click that file . . . nothing happens. It doesn't load, the computer doesn't blow up. Just . . . nothing.

I have since blown out (I hope) all remnants of SU7, and SU8. I will reload 8, then try to import a simple JPEG; if that works, I'll get the file a friend suggested I try, to download SolidWorks, and have a go at that.

              Wish me luck!

Try to simply drag and drop the file from the explorer window to the SU model space. If that also fails, can you share that image? (Simply attach it below the text area you are typing here).

Before getting drastic did you try importing some other JPG file?

                      I wonder what I've been smoking . . .

Dragged the JPEG to the workspace of SU8 newly reinstalled. Nothing.

However, then for laughs I tried File | Import. Bang! There it was.

I'll try another JPEG, maybe a TIFF or PSD to see how that goes.

Then will have another shot at the SolidWorks file.

For all your interest, and help, thank you all!

                        just in case...

with sketchup, you have to select the file type in the import window prior to it being available as a choice.

that said, a solidworks file will not import directly into sketchup so you'll have to export from solidworks a file type that's compatible with sketchup..
.3ds, obj (with plugin), .dxf, etc

Ditto with PSD. See what file types you can import into SU (free and pro) here: http://sketchup.google.com/product/whygopro.html

Edit: maybe this page is better:
