A New Computer Desk For Me
-
It's time for a new computer desk for me. I've been getting along with a little flat pack thing for the last 15 years. Here's the latest iteration.
The Cintiq is already on a mount by Ergotron that allows it to be swung out and dropped down into my lap. With this desk there'd also be room for my MacBook Pro. I'm thinking about a neat little KVM extender from Black Box that would allow me to put the computer elsewhere and connect via CAT5. Only problem is, I don't think it will handle two video displays. I'd have to use a second video over CAT5 unit for the Cintiq.
-
You don't have the possibility to rotate vertically the Cintiq ?
-
Why not? It does now on the same mount.
-
what's the green?
1" steel ? -
Like this ?
-
Jeff, yes. That's what I'm thinking. Painted with green enamel paint.

It's the cap.

At least you didn't delete the whole thread!
I often find myself editing someone's post when I mean to quote it in a reply...
It's just one of the many downsides of being a mod... [/off:2mtg4gr7] -
I've done some things with galv. stl. plumbing pipe for same reasons most do, but have since moved away. They are not cheap given the quantity; tightening / loosening on both ends can be problematic; custom threading is likely required; reworking not friendly to paint or a finished look (plumber's wrenches).
Don't you want symmetry about the keyboard for your monitors as the default? EDIT: I see: the Cintiq is a big Wacom tablet.
I like the box with the slots; a sliding tray or two inside would be even better, and I would want some drawers. I think you're wanting simple but more would work better for me.
-
Jeff, I don't even know what I wrote now so maybe I'll just leave it.
Brooke, no, I don't want symmetry in my monitors in this case. The Cintiq is used as the second monitor and it isn't on all the time. Most of the time when it is, I have it pulled out and down in my lap using it as a tablet. I can move it back farther than i show it in the image but I was too lazy to bother manipulating the Ergotron mount.
I've thought about drawers but the desk I have only has one and I don't use it except to store junk I rarely need. I'm considering a keyboard tray in the center cubby but I will wait until after I've used it a bit. The ones on the sides will be handy for sticking files in for temporary storage.
By the way, what's "the cap"?
Jeff, you may be right on the diameter of the pipe. Especially for the base. I'll spend some time looking when I go to the big box to buy it. Fortunately I think I can make that decision on the fly since the lengths are mainly what I'm concerned with.
-
Trays other than for the keyboard allow easier access to the back of the slots. Otherwise this is a real challenge, or more accurately, impossible if the thing is used (partly filled) as this means not only have you got to physically get to the back through the slot but you've got to move everything out of the way prior to doing so.
-
You can't see it in that view but there's a divider running down the length of the desktop that prevents stuff from getting pushed too far back. You can see it in this view, though.
The top is sort of a pseudo-torsion box and that long rail will provide some stiffness. I plan to stick some of my computer hardware in the back to get it out of the way.
-
I see. Even with my hardware in my face, I have a hard time futzing with it when I need to.
-
The hardware I'm thinking of doesn't need to be futzed with. I just want to not see it.

nice.. i've used that stuff for racks, hooks, and a couple of other random things beforeβ¦ pretty much every imaginable fitting is available etc so it's super handy like thatβ¦
i can't quite recall the outer diameter of 1" but maybe it's a little too small for the desk? (it's definitely strong enough for the desk.. look wise, it might not appear stout enough though? i guess you'll just have to make that call)
anyway, it's a sweet idea.. i'll more likely than not be stealing this idea from you further down the line (ok, let's call it 'borrowing' instead of stealing )
thanks for sharing it.
dude.. i did that thing again and i don't know how to fix it.
i swear im editing my post but then it edited yours instead ??
rich knows how to fix thisβ¦
sorry guys

Nice Dave, though I don't know what Jeff is talking about?

Thanks. I think he's had a little too much sun.

We all make mistakes. Jeff knows what I mean....
