    Hi all

Quoted from Devin Kendig on Chaos Group forums
"if you're wondering if VfS development is currently under way, the answer is yes."

Hope he doesn't mind me posting this here. Great news.

Exaggeration makes a dull story better.

I think development has been underway for some time now. He said a while back in one of those forums that over 100 bugs on his checklist have been addressed already. He told me that we can expect a new beta release at the end of the summer. So I would think mid Fall you may see something because things always get tied up.

I really just wish Chaos would hear our cries and put a dedicated team of like 10 people on this thing and get a plug-in updated asap. Clearly, Chaos doesn't not make a whole lot of money off of the SU plugin otherwise we would have seen a lot happening in the last year. I don't think many folks drop a grand on a rendering plugin for SU when there are others that are much more affordable and 'get the job done'.

VRray for Max is their top priority and always has been.

They are hiring - they announced jobs.

Not necessarily - they where bought up and there's lots of stuff that goes into that transition. And it's not as easy as just throwing people at it - takes quite a bit of resources to update new people on the sourcecode and development process.

We had to spend a good bit of time converting our old Rhino plugin to work with our new codebase that we made during the last VfS development cycle. We also had to adapt to use some of the systems that CG use, which then made making builds of VfS not an option while we were working on the latest VfR update. Once VfS is working with the new systems, buggy beta builds can start getting cranked out. Once the buggy builds are working well enough for a standard user to do anything more than load our plugin and immediately click render, we can start having beta testers play with it. We don't need much help finding the huge obvious problems that come from switching major things in our codebase, but once we are at a point where you can actually use the product again, that's when the fun will begin.

On the plus side, I am currently able to load up VfS and license it without a headache. It immediately crashes after that point... but hey, at least it builds and licenses!

I don't mean to bust chops here, but Maxwell has just come out with yet another release (2.7 with grass - interesting). Cmon Chaos! Let's get a step up on a new release for Pete's sake! I feel like we are light years behind when I look at this plug in. And to be rather frank, if it was a bit faster I would have converted my workflow over. Fortunately, VRay is just a much better solution when I am in a pinch. Which is like every job.

Hey Devin let me try be a bit more positive than valerostudio... hehe πŸ˜„
I've been trying out the latest Vray for Rhino and I'm really happy with the RT engine and with proxy objects... Really hoping for those to be in the next release of VfSU! Would absolutely make my day!

I am not trying to be a Negative Nelly. I am probably the most impatient person in the world when it comes to V-Ray. My love for this engine runs deep and I just like new shiny stuff. 😎

oh I know valerostudio, I was just a bit grumpy that day I think. Thanks for turning that frown upside down though πŸ˜‰You too Pyroluna, glad to hear you like what you see in VfR.

This will put some sparkle back in your eyes, I just saw the first render from the next update. My, how lovely that billboard Susan looks in the VFB again, how I missed her.

We are trying to bring all of the features we added in the latest VfR update, over to VfS for this next update. From there we're hoping we'll be able to develop both products at the same time.

                                  this is great, great news!

One thing about versions: licensed users will have a free upgrade, or will they need to buy it?

My understanding so far is that we will all need to upgrade. Although a lot of existing bugs will be fixed, this will considered a major upgrade and not just a maintenance release. I'm sure someone from Chaos will chime in soon.

I'm not really privy to that kind of info. I didn't find out that the VfR release was going to be a paid upgrade until just before it was released. It all depends on what happens in this development cycle I suppose. Certain features required much more time and effort than others, and have a greater impact on the workflow of the product, so they may have some sort of upgrade fee associated with them. I doubt you will get any answer other than that from anyone here, until we have a better idea of where the product will be upon the time of release (in the middle of beta testing or something like that). You could always try asking on our forums, rather than SketchUcation. I believe I'm the only Chaos Group employee that ever posts here, so this question really won't get much visibility from us here.

Well, looking specifically at VFR - they now have a USB dongle licensing system - and the rhino upgrade was something like $250 during the first month or two of the release, that discount has now ended. I do hope they have a similar upgrade path for current vfs license holders...

Dunno, I'm not a big fan of the whole time-limited discount for current license holders. Feels like they're stretching it a bit. I'm not too keen on dongles and having go through local resellers either. When's a dongle ever stopped piracy?
