Solo - thanks, but I don't know what you mean by "show lines/hidden geometry and pick a face it will appear" - how do i do that?

Top toolbar click on view, then 'hidden geometry', then right click on a face and the texture option will appear.

If you paint a group or component "from outside", you will not have access to texture positioning tools. You need to paint faces directly "inside" the component.
What Solo says is that you cannot access texture positioning tools on curved surfaces either - only on their single facets when hidden geometry is on. I doubt this is the case with a table though.

Yes, Michael is on the right track. You cannot adjust the grain direction if you paint a closed component. You must paint the faces in the component to be able to have any control over the orientation.

FWIW, typically with furniture pieces the grain either runs vertically or horizontally. Once you've got the grain direction set for a horizontal piece and a vertical piece, you can sample the material from one of those faces using the eye dropper or the Paint Bucket with Alt (or Command on the Mac) to apply it to the faces in other components. Even if you aren't seeing the material image you're sampling from, this works. I did a little thing on this here.
