Sketch up for gaming concept art?
-
Hi there,
I am new to this forum so I apologies if this is in the wrong section
I have come to a stage in my career where I want to become a concept artist in the gaming industry. I have worked and studied in architecture and interior for the past 8 years... Now I need a change.
I already have good knowledge in sketch up, vray and photoshop. I would like to use these skills to help develop fanstasy environments for a portfolio to get into the industry. Just wondered if there any artists on this forum who do a smilar thing and could offer me advice and if I was to develop this portfolio will this help me get employed? I can also hand draw so should I do a mixture of the two along with photoshop touch ups.
My initial plan is maybe to concentrate on environments first then maybe go into characters later on.... Will this be beneficial?
Any help will be greatfull plus I live in the west midlands so any possible links or contacts in this area would be I even better!

Hi Alpesh,
Incidentally, a new book has just been released on this topic:

Just what I needed, thanks for that.... Nice to see it used in that industry.

I have made several game maps using SketchUp as a modeler program.
There are also several studios that use SketchUp for a sort of pre-visualization of game worlds before doing detailed modeling in another program.
Here is a example case that Google put on their blog:

Hey all. Indeed, SketchUp is gaining acceptance in the games industry, especially for Indie Game Developers. The easiest way to use it with your games is to export your models to Unity 3D, which is a free game development environment and game engine. In fact, Unity is just about the most awesome thing out there (apart from SketchUp of course ) period! The book describes how to use SketchUp and Unity 3D (and other free tools) to get a complete game level up and running (a walkthrough like a 1st person shooter style). You can export it to web page, Windows or Mac .exe file.
I expect (hope ) a lot of you are going to find this amazingly useful for all sorts of things, especially in the short term for architectural walkthroughs and such, and also as a way to get into games, whether for your own pleasure or as a step up to get a job in the industry.
There's already a few great reviews on Amazon to give you a taste of what's in the book: http://www.amazon.com/Google-SketchUp-Game-Design-ebook/product-reviews/B006EEJSK4/
And a sample chapter here: http://www.packtpub.com/sites/default/files/1345EXP-Chapter-02-Tools-that-Grow-on-Trees.pdf

And Sketchup for Lumion (very more easy than Unity) is also some pleasant for Hobbysts or Pros!
Can be used as speedy model in site. -
I have had some luck taking things from sketchup to unity3d. The beast lighting engine/baking is probably the most attractive thing about it. I will say there is a learning curve, but so far nothing youtube has not be able to teach. Unity3d appears to have a small but dedicated group of users. Though if there are other on the board I would love to know.
