Hello everyone. I would like to tutor my daughter in the use of Sketchup. But I have a problem.

      Here is my problem.

My daughter lives 500 miles from me. I would like to tutor my daughter in the use of Sketchup, using some kind of special software/hardware for
Remote viewing of each others Sketchup sessions in real time over the internet, while communicating via Yahoo Messager with live video cameras and audio in a separate window.

Also, my setup uses TWO desktop computers, The main Sketchup session computer has two monitors, while my secondary computer uses only one monitor.
Both are connected to the net. I would like to use my secondary computer as the Yahoo Messager video cam and audio computer and the main Sketchup computer as MY Sketchup session computer with the actual Sketchup file viewed on one monitor, and the other monitor as a Window of my daughters Sketchup sesson.

My daughter uses a Mac Laptop

What I'm looking for is some kind of App that will allow my daughter to view MY Sketchup session in a separate Window on her Mac Laptop while viewing another window with video from my camera while running her session of Sketchp in another window. Is this possible? If so, got any ideas on what to use? I initially started looking at Remote PC Access type programs, but I don't need to control her computer from mine, or vice versa. I just need remote viewing of each others Sketchup sessions in real time, while having Yahoo Messager and a Sketchup session running simultaneously. Any ideas appreciated.

      Thanks

With Skype, you can share your desktop while you are also able to live voice chat. There is also a camera mode although when sharing desktops, I don't think you can use the camera.

Hello Gaieus and thanks. I was under the impression that Skype was for mobile devices. So, you can use it on desktops too huh? Ok, well I'll check it out. Thanks again.

Microsofties might try SharedView. I have it, but have never had an occasion to use it.

              Hi

Hey Guys, thanks a million for the replies. My daughter just told me she has Skype. Not sure yet if it will do what I need. Frankly thouugh, I can't afford another monthly fee for software use. I really want a free program, as this is only a temporary although maybe permanent situation. She really wants to learn Sketchup, as she just finished her last class in Interior Design. One of the reasons is her last project.
She had to HAND DRAW a two point perspective of a room interior. She had a hard time seeing how the vanishing points related to the perspective of the various planes..like walls. Well, she swore she'd NEVER go through that again. Ha! Youngsters!(She's actually 40, which tells you how old I am. πŸ’š

Hence the Sketchup tutorials. I have probably 1000 .jpgs of various things stored on a host server. I showed her what she could do on Sketchup and she was astounded. Especially if you render. But Sketchup by itself, with a good supply of textures, is outstanding as far as I'm concerned.

I just checked out Teamviewer and it looks awesome. I'll research it a little more before I download it.

Oh, btw, does anyone know why I don't recieve any notifications when someone replies?
Is there something in my profile or something that I need to edit?

                  Again, thanks guys.

Skype is free user to user, you have a computer, she has a computer, you get skype, connect to her, done.

Sorry about the short and to the point reply, just the way it came out.
I have not tried Skype to do what you want, but if my man Gaieus, says it works it probably does.

To recieve replies via email you need to tick the "Notify me when a reply is posted" box on the bottom of your screen, below the preview and submit buttons. Under options, do this before you hit submit, otherwise you have to edit your post and do it then.

I use skype all the time as I live thousands of miles from anyone I know or even work with.

It won't do exactly what you want.

You can share your screen with her or she can share hers with you but you can't do both simultaneously.
So you can show her something then you'll need to swap the screen share so you can see what she does, not ideal but certainly free and easy to do.

If you both happen to have two computers you could set up two skype accounts each and it would work that way by sharing one way on one PC and the other on the other , but you can't run two accounts on one PC at the same time.

Yes, it is only one sharing at a time. But I have used it successfully for teaching SU already and although antialiasing is not the best, Skype has been the fastest p2p screen sharing connection which also offers live voice chat that I have tried. Since it is completely free, it costs nothing to install and try it.

So other software won1t display the various SU tool cursor icons - e.g. you are PushPulling but it still only shows an arrow. These are pretty useless and we have not even talked about the various modification keys that should also alter the cursor icons.

There are of course drawbacks of it:

                          • you can only share with one person at a time (although the Mac version can share with more already)
                          • there is no application control - i.e. you cannot manipulate the other person's model on his/her computer
I have not tried with two computers yet but it sounds interesting actually.

                          Gai...

Just ran across this beta Chrome extension for remote desktop - haven't had a chance to try it though.
