Can I simply install M2 or do I need to install M1 first
No- SU8M2 does not require that you install M1 first.

I don't think we've come up with a number of plugins where it reaches greyed out by bloat. it will happen at some point but I'm not sure at what number of plugins.
I think it might help us to troubleshoot if those of you experiencing the grayed-out context menus could give us a sense of (how many total and which ones specifically) the plugins you have installed.

Not impressed, went back to older version. My terrains don't move as nicely, really hammers my computer. SP animations are about half or less speed, than they used to be. So until I find out what I need to do I will not use it.

Indeed...
I do have a vague 'plan' [when time allows!] to 'Extensionalize' my main scripts and then offer .zip/.rbz versions for alternative installation... if you have v8+++...
Thereby, up-to-date Users can install the updated tools via Preferences - but it needs considerable [unpaid] effort on my part...
AND there are many 'legacy' Users who will still need the .zip version...
Is this google's way to take away rubies too from the free sketchup version? I believe this new way to install rubies is available only in M2 (pro version)?

146 Pluginsi don't think anybody can really read that
(that said, i think you might want to reconsider how you're dropboxing those.. why not sync the actual plugin folder instead of each individual file?)

Extension installation and the accompanying changes to the Ruby API are equally available to both Free and Pro users of SketchUp 8 M2.

Thanks- this will really help us figure out what is going on. You might just post it here, if you don't mind doing that. Alternately, you can PM Tricia for alternatives.

@Jeff: I was just clarifying whether the new way to install plugins was the way forward for sketchup in general or just for sketchup pro...
@jbacus: Thankyou for clarifying This may be out of topic, but is the google team working on a sketchup that is able to handle more geometry (heavier models)? Because that would be the only push I'd need to go pro... Its not every day I get to interact with the developing team so... Thankyou for this great piece of software...

For the mix here are my own plugin/extension/toolbar stats...
Plugins:
Loading:
RB 297
RBS 9
Disabled:
RB! 327
RBS! 11
This can never be entirely correct as several scripts will/won't load other files from within subfolders, but it's a reasonable indication of numbers...
Scripts within 'Tools' are also not included above [there are 13 of these loading].Extensions:
Active 18
Inactive 16
Toolbars:
Active 46
Inactive 13I load/activate them as needed.
Obviously I have almost every script known to man, and some unknown, as I have several 'under development' at any one time...
But I get no gray-out menus with this current 'set'.
Many plugins do produce a lot of 'commands' to overwhelm Sketchup's capacity, but I find this is just below that fatal limit...
However, if I activate too many more complex extras then random gray-outs do occur... -

Have you checked if Hardware Acceleration has become disabled for some reason?

.We're getting a few reports on disabled menus around here, the first thing we make to to tell the users is to check if they have any of the plugins installed that created command object in the context menu handler. It's been a long time since I've seen anyone with that issue around. These days it seems to be that the users have a large number of plugins installed. I can keep an eye out and forward these report to your team if you like. Any particular channel?
I'd really like to help as much as I can, because the issue makes people think it's specific plugins that is the problem and it leads to hours of troubleshooting for the users and developers. -
nice!!!

I don't think it would be proper for me to concern the likes of the Google SketchUp Team with my plugins folder until I had actually done my due diligence in locating the issue... my old plugins folder is a mess you can rest assured. after installing the fresh copy of SU M2 and reloading plugins one at a time, I think I have everything I need and no greying out... so I'm pretty happy. haven't even noticed any new features... but SU seems to be running very well and my transition has been smooth.
my transition for SU 8 Pro.
- install new installation to current google folder. name "Google SketchUp 8M2"
- make a backup of the google sketchup plugins folder.
- cut and paste plugins over 1 at a time starting sketchup after each one.
- copy and paste materials, components and styles folders over to new SU folder.
some how google finds the old installation and moves all your settings files and templates.
I did not have to re-authorize.some plugins may have to be turned back on and moved back into position.
hopes this helps.

http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=27941&hilit=+menu#p243583I'll take a look today and see if I can fix the root problem rather than have a witch hunt for the plugins causing this problem.
I know what's causing it and hopefully it won't be too intrusive to fix.
