Hi all could I ask a favour for somebody to import an OBJ into sketchup to create a terrain for me I have tried but my machine wont do it ...

1.7m triangles = unmanageable

I am trying to open this file using the object importer like Richard said it is pretty unmanageable, i'm about one tenth of the way to importing it. Was this mesh generated from contours ? If so you can import the contours directly into sketchup. Then use the simplify contours ruby before building your mesh it will reduce geometry dramatically i have had success this way before. Alternatively you can import the mesh from google earth but this will really be low poly.

I'll give it a try.

LOL 13 hours later (i think this could be a valid argument for being multi processor aware)

Sorry mate i really tried for you, this morning i got the message "sketchup unexpectedly quit"

So am I. I take too long to process, so I quit after 10 hours...Sorry.

That's one big assed terrain, reducing it for SU will be an ask.
The problem is to what level can I reduce it without loss of detail, or how much loss of detail will be acceptable. IMO I'd have to reduce it considerably in order to fit in with SU's poly diet.
I have converted it, however the .skp is 250MB.

I was having the same issues as you guys, thanks for all your efforts, i think a simplification is acceptable as long as the profile of the hills are roughly the same would be great
