Who works with Sketchup? Do you freelance?

Hi people, I imagine there are a lot of people who sketchup for fun, who here works using sketchup?
I draw small garden buildings generally speed is preferred to detail, prior to this I designed exhibitions using sketchup and autoCAD where the opposite was true.
I'm thinking of freelancing in my evenings, preferably furniture/small scale architecture. Is there much work freelancing as I don't see many sketchup jobs, usually sketchup is required as an additional tool to say Adobe/CAD.
Would be great to hear your experiences? Thanks

Hey Andy. I use SU quite frequently in my job but I don't freelance, I work for an Architecture firm. I also modeled for Form Fonts and use it for fun. There are many freelance artists here who I am sure will chime in as well.
I would say your best bet is to build up a portfolio of your work then contact local firms and offer your services. Maybe build a website with your work and make it slick. Also look into sites that offer SU content and see how you could add to their libraries.

I guess you could say I am a freelancer with SketchUp since I don't use it in my day job but I do some drawing work for pay.

I have used Sketchup in my job for simple visualizations, a few times. But until those "above" me embrace the concept of this as a powerful tool, I will probably continue to model for fun as I learn toward high quality finished images.

I freelance using sketchup. You're right about not existing a lot SK specific work but I think that's because usually it's not specific for anything. The client will ask for images/CAD/3d models and he either doesn't care where you did it or need to know where you did it as long as you deliver in the format he asks and he can open/use it.
The most common work is images, mainly renders. Either for construction or advertising or whatever, you'll have to deliver a final high quality image that will be, most of the time, from a render engine or Photoshop, than directly from sketchup. So how you build the 3D model will be with you.
For Cad drawings the client may want simple images of the 3D model and so the ones from SK may be enough. I do the 3d model in SK and export some perspectives and then use the 3d model to help doing the CAD drawings.
The most uncommon work is being asked for specific SK 3D model. I think this may be because Sk it's so easy to use that people/companys itself can do it and so this type is more commonly asked by privates without experience in this type of software. If you're asked for other software 3d model you can build the stuff in SK, import it in that software, and do the other stuff that may be asked for the model (UVW, animation, materials etc etc). I don't have much experience in this part (sk imported 3dmeshs can have some problems in other softwares so for this it may be better to build it in the software asked) but maybe someone here can help you with that.

I use Sketchup regularly in my work as a freelancer/consultant in the custom yacht building industry. The uses range from initial interior concepts to construction details and construction drawings with cultists. My clients are mostly interested in results and less interested in which program or formats are involved, at least on the interior.
I think what is more important is what you bring to the table besides being able to draw. Dave is a good example, he does absolutely beautiful drawings with clear details, but more importantly, I'm sure he knows how to build what he draws. He is likely to find any problems and from his experience will find solutions that will save the builder time or maybe make a better piece because of his insight.
In my case I do drawings and details, but what I am really selling is years of experience and solutions in my industry, I just happen to use Sketchup and they accept that.

Just a quick thanks, I'll try to take it all in at the weekend. I'm going to meet up with the Shaderlight people soon as there doing an open surgery type event soon.
