      Hi,

I am a newbie here and to SU. Thanks for this great forum and lots of help!!

I am working on a trellis model. Instead of making laths and crossing them together, I made a flat panel and cut away diamond shapes. The diamonds were copied into an 2D array distribution. Then I used the Joint Push Pull plugin to push (cut) into the panel. For some reason, the push-in does not open the holes but leave diamond shaped faces on the other side. I can select those faces (not including boundaries) and then delete them to open up the holes, but there were 400 to go. πŸ‘Ž

So I would appreciate any help or suggestions to make it. Also, I wonder if there is a way to drag-select faces but not their boundaries, so that they can be deleted in one move.

      Thanks!

        welcome to SCF.

You could turn off edges under Styles>Edit>Edges and then use a left to right selection to select the faces you don't want to delete.

One other thing you might consider is redrawing the trellis to make it more efficient and easier to handle. Here's an example I did of a grille that would be similar.

On the right you can see three different components. It's just copies of them that make up the entire grille. The dark green one is really an orange one. It just shows the center. I deleted the faces in the seames (you can see the magenta back face color showing through on the right) and I hid the seam lines so the grille looks like it is a single entity. With these three elements, I can make the grille as large as I'd like very easily.

View > Edge Style > deselect Edge

That lets me select only faces. Cool! Thanks a lot for the hint.

My method may be very inefficient since Joint Push Pull takes quite a few minutes to process all faces. In your method (bottom up), you made small pieces and them group them together. Is that right? Thanks!

Yes. I broke the grille down into smaller units that could be copied into an array of any size. I made these into components so editing one of them edits all of the instances. If you wanted to, you could explode all of the components after the trellis is made but that would increase file size. There's really no need to explode the components, though.

              Hi folks.

Sometimes it is best to think 2D before 3D.

See this SU file for ideas:

It is certainly right to go 2D first.

And the shift + double click idea is cool. πŸ‘ Is it in the help file or hidden feature?

Once you have a selection you can add to it by selecting other things by selecting them with the ctrl-key held down.
To remove things from the selection use the ctrl+shift-keys or to remove/add things use the shift-key [it's a toggle, so picking the object again would re-add what was just removed, whereas the ctrl+shift-keys always remove things, IF they are already selected, otherwise they are just ignored...]

                    Hi folks.

The SHIFT - Double click idea is in the help but in pieces.

In one part it is written that the SHIFT key act as toggle to add/subtract from the selection.

In another part it is written that a double click on a face will select the face and its perimeter.

In my brain, one idea germinated that I should try both to see if I could add/subtract a face and its perimeter. So, I experimented and discovered that it works

You can experiment with all sort of combinations like SHIFT - Window select to add/subtract using a selection window. keep i mind that Window Select left to right is different from right to left.

You can also use triple clicks with SHIFT and with CTRL too. This adds a lot of possibilities when selecting geometries.

Another trick that may help if you have something really tough to select and are afraid of loosing the selection if you inadvertently click or choose a tool (this kind of mishap happens) is to create a group with an easily selected part of what you want to select. Then, select some more stuff, cut it and paste it in place inside the newly created group. Repeat untill everything you want is inside the group. Then, go inside the group and do what you want to do. Explode the group when done. If all you want is to delete all these objects, simply delete the group.

                    Just ideas.
