Basic Texture Problem
-
Newbie here - trying to inlay tiles into a masonry wall. No matter what I try, the texture of the tiles is distorted by the wall's texture. Put another way, the wall texture bleeds through. The distortion changes with perspective. Apparently it has something to do with multiple textures/colors in the same plane. But I've seen models with inlays or different textures that appear to be in the same plane. So how do users get around the distortion? Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Well, apart from the obvious suggestion to use materials to represent tiles, if you insist on your way and you want to lay out the tiles individually, the other solution would be to texture the face with a generic mortar (or what you call the material in the grouts) and put the tiles in as components that glue to this face and also cut a hole. This way, wherever there is a tile, the mortar material would be cut away and you would not experience that flickering Z-fighting (if I suspect your visual effect correctly).
See a simple example attached. Find the tile component in your Component browser (Window menu) > In model library (that small house icon). Notice that until you click to place the component to its place, the same Z-fighting happens but once the component is placed, it goes away.
If you wish, you can even add some thickness to such a tile (double click to edit and use the PushPull tool).

SketchUp doesn't support layers of textures; just a single, straight diffuse map. If you want part of a wall to be tiled, then you'll need to delineate that section of wall with the Line Tool so that it can be selected separately. Then overpaint any existing wall texture with a tile texture. For extra effect, you could extrude that section of wall forwards a few mm with the Push/Pull Tool.

Gai - I noticed that if I create a tile component (glue-to, cut-into) and then drag it onto the wall component face, I get the Z. But if I take the tile component from the library and place it onto the wall component face, it works fine.
You either have to create it ON the face or bring it in from the Component browser.
If you create it on a different gluing plane, it will not automatically unglue and reglue to the next plane you place it on (there are plugins however)

I was able to reproduce both of these approaches. What a relief. Thank you.

Alan - I noticed that if I draw a tile on a wall component face, I get the Z. But if I draw a tile onto the wall face and then make everything a component, it works fine.

Hey! Pinocchio. What's with all the different avatars? Are you suffering some kind of identity crisis?
-
Ah yes. I am trying to find my identity.

Come back "the real Gaieus"... all is forgiven [even when we know what's in the back of your wardrobe

Ah, maybe there I am. I'll have a look at the wardrobe.
