      Hey Chop,

I'll tell you what, you give it a go and I'll help you along, that way you learn how to do it at the same time.

Chop, 'go for it!' ๐Ÿ‘ I heard Pete (Solo) normally charges in the region of $1000 for this kind of work. He must be feeling generous today ๐Ÿ˜„

              Chop,

Firstly how fluent are you with SU?

How much organic modelling will you do in the future? the reason I ask is I'd suggest you purchase a commercial plugin called Artisan for these types of projects.

Here I'll start with a very low poly arm, you can add the details as needed.

And here is the head proxy with ear proxy, this way you can learn how I created the proxy, I'd say 2 iriterations subdivision will be needed for a smooth clean look. just add teeth, disks for eyes and a simple hat and you are done.

                  spooky proxyhead.skp

And with some playing you should get something like this:

                    Pete, note that he says...

Now what is that poly count exactly (or less exactly but roughly).

Note that you can go two ways:

                    1. more poly and less to leave for texturing...
                    2. less poly but leave the details for texturing - in which case you need good textures!

                    Gai...

                      Really informative posts Solo ๐Ÿ‘

Are there any basic rules that apply when creating a proxy, or is it just a matter of trial and error and building up enough experience to figure out what works best?

That's the thing, I could do tutorials until the cows come home and still many folks would not be able to create a single thing with Artisan proxy to subdivision.
The proxy is the first step and the most important step. I cannot teach anyone to make a proxy as it's something learned by trial and error, it's more in the imagination, you create a basic shape that you think will subdivide to look like something else, you go back and forth tweaking until you are happy. Sooner or later it becomes quicker and easier as you get a feel for what it will be like, practice and play is the best way to learn.

I found that by trying to recreate a famous character helped me learn as I will know when I'm wrong as it can only look one way, thus it took days for me to perfect my first one (bugs bunny) which I can now do in an hour or two.

I always start with this basic primitive shape.

I totally agree. My problem is I stay there!

                                Solo,

Thanks for the helpful explanation and posting the proxy primitive. As I suspected it all comes down to practice, practice, practice.

Now I just need to find a poly-reducing plugin for my eyes ๐Ÿ˜„ .
