I have about as much knowledge on Macs as I do on the complete works of Sarah Jessica Parker (= 0) so am looking for a bit of help....

A student who I am tutoring uses a mac, I have always used Windows, We have got through most of differences but I can't fathom out why she can't orbit by holding down the mouses' wheel button? It's extremeley frustrating and there must be a way to sort it out? Not had time to sort it yet as only meet for a limited number of hours.

So, can anyone point me to a fix for this?

      Thanks very much. πŸ˜„

What mouse is she using? The latest Mac mouse doesn't even have a center mouse wheel/button. When I bought my MacBook Pro, I also bought the cheapest wireless Logitech mouse I could find (about $200) and use that instead. I just plugged it in and didn't install the driver and it works perfectly. We replaced the Mac mouse that came with the iMac with a Microsoft USB mouse which also works perfectly and much better than the Mac mouse with the tiny little ball.

I would suggest to your student that she switch to a PC-type mouse.

I have no idea, d'oh. 😳 It's definitely got a middle button though.

I'd guess it's the Mac mouse with the little ball. I didn't enjoy that mouse at all.

Hmmm, no, tbh, from what I can remember it's a wireless PC style mouse must be more observant.

I wonder if its a mouse driver issue. I don't install mouse drivers on any computer.

Do you know if there's an option on the Mac for changing mouse settings, like there is in control panel > mouse, on windows?

There are some basic settings under System Preferences but nothing for assigning center mouse button behavior, at least on my MacBook Pro.

if you have MagicMouse you can use BetterTouchTool and have a middle button for orbit setup

Just found out the mouse is a Logitech M505 if that makes any difference to proceedings?

Next thing to find out is if she installed the Logitech driver software.

that's the mouse i use with the laptop and the mmb does work for orbiting if the logitech driver isn't installed (and i don't have it installed)..

if she does have it installed, you'll have to go to the logitech control panel (or whatever it's called) in system preferences..

you'll want to select the 'custom' option for the middle mouse button then assign it to function as ^⌘LMB (control - command - left mouse button)

                                    Hi folks.

After four years of use, my wireless Mighty Mouse (with the small round roller) started acting badly, with the roller nor working for scroll up. None of the tricks that I knew to clean it works anymore. Except for that problem, this mouse has always been a pleasure to use. I enabled the center roller as the third button in the Mouse Preference Panel and it worked perfectly with SketchUp (SU).

Unable to find a replacement since Apple do not make Wireless Migthy Mouse any more, only wired one and I prefer wireless since it save on desktop clutter, I decided to try the Apple Magic Mouse. It works but, without a third button, it is useless for SU. However, before going to buy the Magic Mouse, I had read about the BetterTouchTools software. I installed it and created a center button (3rd button if you prefer). It works but, since this mouse do not gives a tactile feedback, I need to peek at the mouse to make sure that my index is in its center to be able to use the virtual 3rd button. Also, with SU, it stops working from time to time so, I decided to buy a Logitech 505 wireless mouse with a classic roller. It worked like a charm. At first, I did not install the driver since, it did not required it to work. However, the speed is too great and I need to go to the mouse controp panel to slow it down a little. After a couple of weeks, I discovered that the wheel of this mouse can also be pushed sideway. But, you need to install the Logitech Mouse Driver to enable this feature as well as the use of the two additional buttons on the side of the mouse. I did and I discovered that the mouse reaction, especially with SU is now quite sluggish. You must note that I also have the Magic Trackpad hooked wirelesly on my iMac. I don't know if it may have an effect. So, after fighting for an hour or so, trying to draw with SU, I gave up and removed the Logitech driver. I dont have the sideway click and cannot use the additional buttons but at least, it is usable with SU.

                                    Just ideas.

Not sure if this applies to a Mac, but I upgraded my Logitech mouse last year and had the devil of a time getting the wheel down click to work like my previous mouse.

Try this; Open your Logitech mouse settings dialog and redefine the wheel down as "Middle Button".

Or uninstall the Logitech driver altogether. It isn't needed. The mouse will work just fine without it.

I have a logitech mouse that did not start up with the scroll wheel button working as expected.

I purchased http://plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/ and used it to set my middle button, as well as a slew of other settings. Works perfectly.

                                          Cheers, Chuck
