      Hi,

      I would like to ask for some advice with adding texture material to the object imported from 3ds file.

      I've impotred curtains from 3ds file which should look as in the image below:

      http://www.top-info.com.pl/michal/curtain_3ds.JPG

      After importing to the Sketchup this object looks like this:

      http://www.top-info.com.pl/michal/curtain_sku2.JPG

      I've made a "cleanup entire model" with cleanup.rb plugin and "Soften/Smooth edges" Sketchup option but it doesn't help.

      What should I do with the imported object to obtain the result as in the first picture...

      Thank for any help...

      Cheers

      Michal

        You'll need to UV Map in an external progrom like LithUnwrap or RoadKill (both free). Or use a commercial tool. Whaat has made a plugin to help these type of situations.

          Hi Michal,

          Three things;

          1. it will never really look like that inside SU as SU has some limited texturing capabilities. It can still look better however (even without hassling with plugins too much);
          2. Import the texture image in a much smaller scale. This way it is too fuzzy. Make a simple rectangle vertically, more or less parallel to the curtain and import the texture onto it as it is easy to scale it on a flat face.
          3. After importing it, right click > Texture > Projected.
            Now select the Paint tool again and hold down the Alt key and sample the projected material from this face
            turn off hidden geometry (if it is on) and paint your curtain.

          Gai...

            Gaieus,

            Won't the Projection method look crap? It'll will stretch and distort around the wrinkles. I know you don't like suggesting plugins as a first answer but for this type of situation i think it's the best solution. Not my choice, i'd just paint them white πŸ˜’

              Yes, where the wrinkles are very deep, they can look bad (that's what I also said; will never look as good in SU as in Max).
              If it is too ugly, you can put a plant in front or eventually use the plugin. Don't know how efficiently it will work with non closed shapes/volumes.

              Gai...

                Hi Gaieus, thanks very much for reply.
                I've made all the steps as you suggested and it looks better, but still not good enough.

                Perhaps I will need to use the plugs as rclub24 suggested

                Thanks again for your help...πŸ˜„
