Resetting sketchup
-
Hi guys, My sketchup often quits unexpectedly or I get the rainbow wheel of death where the application is not responding.
It's not so much of a problem in that it always autosaves, but it has happened around 7 times today and I have online been working for 4 hours.
So how can I reset sketchup get rid of all the materials etc.
I'm working on and imac and the sketchup is version 7.1.
Cheers

Do you just want to remove the materials from your SketchUp mmodel? If so, in the Materials browser, click on the little house icon. Then right click on the materials you want to remove and choose Remove. You might find there are materials that you aren't using and they could be purged. Below the window showing the materials in the model, click on the drop down menu on the right and choose Purge Unused.

I should have mentioned everytime I try to purge it quits sketchup, so that's a no go unfortunately.

Can you post the SKP file so we can see it?

try turning off the automatic save feature, it may not be the total answer to crashes, but it will help
-
It is not a specific file as it happens to any drawing. I could turn off autosave, but why?

you may want test, if disabling "Window > Settings/Configuration (dunno?) > OpenGL > Hardware Acceleration..." improves stability... if yes, the OGL support of the video driver causes the problem.

the thing about the autosave off 'fix' is that it still doesn't prevent crashes.. so, when sketchup crashes, i still want to recover the file when possible.
if it were simply -- turn off autosave and sketchup won't crash then yeah, that's a good recommendation but really, it's not the best advice in the world..

I can only speak from my experience on my PC.
I believe the default auto save is set for every 5 minutes, and this would interfere with I was doing and crash on me.
Someone suggested to me to turn off this feature, and I have had A LOT LESS crashes, but I do save often, and do not rely on autosave.
Just my 2 cents worth, for something that works for me.By the way jeff, I never said SP was NOT going to crash on you.

yeah, i know.. i'm not trying to battle or anything.
No battle Jeff, far from it.
SU can be finicky at times, saving often is important, I just feel more comfortable with doing my own savings, and of course getting pissed off when I crash, and I forgot to save. -
Then again jeff, my old computer had only 4 megs of memory, and could not keep too many programs open.
But now I got 24 megs, and I'm pretty happy about it.
So SU stays open all day long.
At the moment I'm rendering in kerkythea, photoshopping the renders, and constructing in SU, so far no crashes. -

the thing is, with autosave being on, i'll sometimes actually be able to recover the file at the same point i was working upon a crash so i keep it on..
but, now that i read myself saying that, (i can only recover some of the time) maybe it's in these instances where autosave is causing the crash??
sometimes, sketchup will crash and i don't get an AutoSave_(Name).skphmm...

wow, i really screw this thread up..
i meant to make a new post that quoted some of what i wrote in my previous response but i ended up editing that post instead..
so, my last post may not make much sense in the threaded order.. sorry.
regardless, maybe autosave is causing 1/2 of my crashes ??

Jeff, try it with autosave on, and autosave off, and compare the amount of crashes. see which works best for you.
I did that a long time ago, and OFF works best for me. Either way, keep on sketchupping.
