would anyone give me an idea of the largest size admissible to be inserted in a model as background? I am having trouble with a model and I suspect the reason is the fact that I created a billboard-like background using a 13MB picture.

        13MB in what format?
What might be of more importance is the pixel width and height.
        What trouble are you getting?

          thomas,

it is a jpg measuring 7990x1146 pixels. I think it is too much but am not certain. how much do you think it would be ok?

i'm wondering if the problems are in the model itself?
what happens if you delete the geometry and are only left with the image?

fwiw, i just brought a 16MB jpg (10,000 x 5660) jpg into an existing sketchup file and had no problems with it.. i tried using it as a texture and as an image as well as 'use maximum texture size' both on and off in the openGL settings. i also tried different scaling of the image ranging from 1' wide to 1 mile wide.
it worked fine under all settings
            ?

I wonder too if the problem is not in the model. it became difficult to even open it: anything takes forever and eventually I have to close it.

I went back to a previous backup copy and inserted a smaller image. so far no problems.

SU will not display that image in its full resolution, it will sample it down to max 1024x1024 - or 2048x2048 if you enable Maximum Texture Size.
If you need larger for rendering I'd try to use a smaller size in SU to keep the SU model small and link the render material to a larger version.

                  thanks jeff and thomas,

I am inclined to think my model has some problem: it is amazing how long I am waiting for anything. but, how do you go about checking for problems? I did the usual purge and checked to see if the file had any problems but it is still very slow. how do you guys check for texture problems and the like?

SketchUp insert a picture, the larger the image file is not more clear. Pixel control 2000px below picture will be clearer. SketchUp, 8 better than 7.

I haven't tested it with the newest version, but when I last tried it, PhotoMatch background images were not being downsampled by SU, and I could export images with the detail intact.
