when I try to push/pull a shape within a shape (like a box within a box) to make a hole in the larger shape, sometimes it will not work, it just keeps going, pushing the smaller shape out the back (jeez, I hope this is making sense). OK, let's say I have a 4" square shape, 1" deep. A block, basically. I draw a smaller square on the face, say a 2" square, and try to push/pull that shape to make a hole through the larger shape. Well, like I said, sometimes it just won't work, either it keeps going and pushes out the back, or just stops at the back but won't make a hole, there's just a face at the bottom of the hole. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm guessing that you need to stop accurately on the back face, try snapping to one of the bottom corners when pushing thru to the back side.

Also watch this if you haven't yet, and the rest of the series as well.

You just need to snap onto the back face - if you know its exactly 2" you can also type 2" and press enter and it should punch the hole. If you haven't make the 'box' you are punching through with perfectly parallel faces you won't get the hole to punch this way at all. If that is the case either make sure both faces are parallel OR pushpull a considerable distance through the back face, then select the edges of the pulled shape and 'intersect with model' to cut the back-face, then erase the unwanted bits and you will have a punched hole - not recommended for minor inaccuracies - fix the cause!
BUT the method is useful if you have an intentionallywedge shaped wall that you want to punch a hole through...Capture.PNG
