SketchUp 8 = SLOOOOW (Solved)
-
Anyone else finding Sketchup 8 to be very slow at mesh selection? I first noticed while selecting terrains and didn't give it much thought, but I kept finding it SU would hang when picking just "surface" area...which is odd. I decided to do some tests with SU 7.1 and SU 8. Huge difference!!
I edited the video to cut out some of the waiting for SU8 to process. Basically what took SU 7.1 a few seconds to select, took SU8 three minutes to select!
I subdivided a box with SDS plugin......I used 5 iterations..... in both 7.1 and 8 for the test. Here are the results -

Also notice how it took almost a minute longer to select just the surface without hidden geometry on. It's very odd.
Can anyone do a similar test in SU 8 and confirm that it's not just a problem on my end? If it is I'll have to reinstall. If I can't fix it, I think I'm reverting....I own BoolTools, so what's the point of a slower, new version?

my observations (mac)
selecting was nearly identical with su7 and 8.
the most noticeable slowdown was window selecting with hidden geometry on (using the same shape as you were w/30720 entities)
su7 consistently took 4 seconds while su8 took 6 seconds...
selecting the surface only was basically immediate with both versions..
the weirdest behavior i found was triple-clicking the surface only in order to select the surface + the hidden geometry.. at first, i thought su8 was simply incapable of doing it with a high poly object (as it worked fine on a simple sphere).. i tried various timing etc but couldn't get it to work.. i found that it needs a quadruple click in order for it to catch ??
that said, the quad click in 8 and the tripleclick in 7 are both way faster (nearly instant) than window selecting with hidden geometry turn on..(even though both methods end up with similar selects [ie-everything]) -
hmm.. scratch that quad click thing.. triple click works fine on my laptop and selecting is a little faster as well (2x 2.66 i7).. must be a mouse setting.
subdivide and smooth was noticeably slower though than my desktop (quad xeon 2.66).. the first sds operation is nearly instant with 4 iterations but doing it again with 1 iteration takes a while..
curious adam, what happens if you select all (ctrlA on windows?) on that shape in su8?
that's insta select for me even with hidden geometry turned on.

You may be right but its a bit surprising SU8 would be so much slower. The first thing I'd check is that you don't have a Ruby script that is watching each and every Selection you make and slowing everything down.

The things that kill the speed for me are Shadows and Fast Feedback.
-
Thanks Jeff, Adam & Jim.
Jeff, Ctrl A was a bit faster, but not too much. Still at a turtles pace compared to SU7.1.
Adam, I tried checking the ruby console when selecting a surface, but nothing there. I also thought it may be the RP tools plugin causing the slow down as one of the icons seems to gray out while selecting a surface. I uninstalled and it didn't help. Other than that, not sure to see what plugins would be causing it. I guess I will remove them all except for SDS and check again.
I also reinstalled SU8 and that didn't help.
Jim, I check and I actually had "Fast Feedback" checked in 7.1 and not in 8, so I enabled it in 8, but it didn't seem to help either. You say "fast feedback" slows things down? Is this because the video card is working faster than the cpu can keep up with?
It would be nice if someone on a windows machine could try and subdivide a box to 5 iterations and see if there drag selection time is similar. It's obviously not a system issue as I'm testing both versions on the same machine. I'm also pretty sure it's been like this since the first day I upgraded.

Win7 / Dual Core / ATI Radeon 4500
SU8 was slower slightly, but the application minimized after selection. Normally happens on my system when SU goes for a bit of a think. It usually means it's finished!
Hope this helps...

I have the same issue on selection in SU 8, much slower than 7.1...Boring.
EDIT : Sorry, I was wrong, SO MUCH SLOWER....please Google correct this !! More than five minutes to select all faces and edges of a terrain made with the sandbox. !!! where 7.1 did it in 10 seconds.... (60670 entities).
EDIT : My configuration : HP Z600 workstation, Bi-Xeon, 8gb ram, quadro fx 1800, last nvidia driver.

I removed all plugins except for SDS and tried the same test. Selection speed was back to normal. Hmmmm? So, it's either a plugin that I've added since the upgrade to 8, or there is an issue with an old plugin that is experiencing a stall within the new Ruby infrastructure. Good news - I narrowed it down to a plugin issue and not a Sketchup issue....Bad news - I have 8 million plugins and checking them one by one will take all year!
-
I replicated this on a second machine and got same result. Slower but not 5 minutes only seconds.
Do you have LSS Toolbar installed? This created havoc with my SU8. Graphical anomalies and performance degradation.
Just a thought...
-
Thanks Rich! No, I tried and remove the LSS toolbar back in 7.1 as I had issues with it as well. I'll work at finding the culprit and post the results if I do.
-
I'll also have to remove one by one my plugins in order to see which one cause the problem. I'll give feedback soon.
-
have either of you removed all of your plugins to see if it is in fact a plugin causing this?
just curious -
FOUND IT! - Render(In) plugin I installed one of the early Beta builds, played with it once or twice and left it sitting in there to reek hell on my workflow! Perhaps it's an issue that is fixed now in one of the new releases. What a relief that is. And it was a good excuse to clean out my ruby closet!
Thanks to everyone who helped me get to the bottom of this. It will definitely save me from a few more gray hairs!

Hi Earthmover,
I have the same problem on my office computer but do not have render(in) plugin installed. I hope it's another plugin of mine that causes the problem...I'll continue to search for it.

wow, that's nasty.
just installed on mac to see if it causes the same problem and yes, it does.. -
Is the current RenderIn(latest release) causing issues?

yes, the one dated sept 17, 10
v0.81 -
Ok, in fact I had also the Renderin plugin installed. Removed it and the problem's gone. My apologies to Google team for putting responsability on SU8

lol..
