Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund for Basecamp 2010

Yes, Simon, I also have to agree with some of the above.
The very problem is that even the time allowed is so short that setting up an effective yet fully transparent and traceable system seems to be impossible and even those who got those personal invites are so confused and have so little info that no-one knows what will happen.
And I know that many-many member whom I would really love to nominate for instance (not that I have so many nominations), could not afford the trip either. This is the worst part.

So on that basis, you don't pay your taxes to the US government?
Rick
hehe, I DO pay, and I use that as my basis for knowing how I hate to give money to dis-organized funds that I am uncertain will be well managed

Your gesture is noble, and maybe necessary, but it's not yet known if we will need this approach. I hope we're represented by members who shaped SU and created this great community
My hope is the same. It seems to me natural (in the actual "Money sensitive issue") to assist them in the charge. Nothing noble in my case, just friendship into a powerful community i guess.

But it sounds like a gift tax nightmare, and really more difficulties than it might be worth.
It sounds like a gift tax nightmare: this argument touch me a lot. It can be a reality for who would assume to administer donations, for who would be supported.

If that TAFF had a system where you could set up your own initiative, and people could just send a little money, and then people who were invited could sign up to be eligble to get the money, that would be cool.
I thought it was what I was not far from proposing?
0)just send a little money (40$ was certainely too much: 10$ get a better chance)
1)support 3,4 delegates (a fixed amount of money each)
2)help for the travel decided by vote for people who sigh up to be eligible, depending of the money remaining!( the difficulty is that the price of the travel vary a lot, and the help can't be the same)Thank you guys for these words. Your replies show me the friendship you credit me! I understand the difficulties. The better is probably to do nothing
and avoid nightmares.
But don't worry! my only 40 bucks for final donation shouldn't give nightmare to anyoneI am going to do in a normal way: use the paypal link for each main developer I haven't yet made my donation.

I think we're going to have a great event again this year
Google team makes me nervous. It comes and won't hear nothing. It sounds like if everything is perfect with SketchUp, no cloud in the blue sky! Would It be possible to deal new ideas this way? This is not won.

Simon you're a good guy. You should come out for this thing if you've got the funds available. It would be great to meet in person,

Dear Chris, I think the same of you.

I post this here because i need to know one thing: how do you get hold of an invite to the BaseCamp? I'd love to go, really, If I knew I was going my life would be really nicer right now so... how do I get an Invitation? I read the basecamp page but got no clue.
If I had an invitation, I know I would have the cash to go (but I should start to think now about a new passport! OMG!), but I don't know how to get one.
If it is difficult, I would be quite happy to help someone of this splendid community to go...
Please, if any of you has some information, let me know!!

Being relatively new here and without standing or much understanding, let me continue... Seems that SU G teams are likely well aware of the things which are discussed here and (somewhat) efficiently so, the little electrons, the internet, the speed of light being whatever they are, and the good folks who actively promulgate the sharing and the discourse being what they are; it all goes on in a somewhat efficient manner, or I should say potentially more efficiently than in the flesh, though I don't doubt that a strong case can be made for the opposite. I appreciate your intention, Simon, and am grateful for your enthusiasm, I just don't think anyone's material presence is worth what what it might cost relative to what might be accomplished online with the same resources, though I know that is a sloppy kind of math (example, more specifically financial than I was thinking of: donating to developers, or tut writers whose works we use).

Bumping this thread...

Those who were invited can "nominate" further invitees. Guys, have a look at the 3D BaseCamp topic (or even Oli's post here) as there are a bunch of people who have not used up all their nominations yet.

The basic idea of this thread (Taff for Basecamp) is dead . (for this year?).
So the thread can be abandoned.
My 40 bucks (big deal isn't it) had already gone to a great ruby developer.
