Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund for Basecamp 2010

It's a shame that it is already clear that some (a good deal) of the invites will be wasted as people can't afford the travel/lodging costs.
Taff Goch Had given me very innocently a possibly good Idea:
I was searching for the meaning of Taff (in fact: Taff (Welsh nickname, for Dave) Goch (Welsh, for "red")) and I have found:The Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund
Taff _ wikipedia
From the TAFF ballot form: The Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund was created in 1953 for the purpose of providing funds to bring well-known and popular [science fiction fans familiar to those on both sides of the ocean across the Atlantic. Since that time TAFF has regularly brought North American fans to European conventions and European fans to North American conventions.]So I begin.
I don't want to go myself.
But you can count for me right now for 40$simon

I come back,
Please You! my friends into SCF, help me to make this project alive. I believe in it. It would be a great step to weld more preciously this community. But we are in hurry for September.
@unknownuser said:
TAFF exists solely through the support of fandom. The candidates are voted on by interested fans all over the world, and each vote is accompanied by a donation [...]
I afraid we have no time this year to organize a vote, even if they have got the good solution. We will see after how to manage the money
So Please if I have friends in there: initiate with intention of some bucks donation.

I come back. Hey Scf! well my proposition doesn't seem to hold a great enthousiasm..
Please let me sell my idea a little bit more
-first, we can see it is about established that Google which is very generous for number of things is not going to put a penny into the present situation.
-Second, as fans of SketchUp, we definitely know that we have to speak strongly to Google SketchUP team this year. This means that we have to send some representatives with an authority which can't be hold over. It would be very better those people be without any financial dependency with Google!
-third, we are Total members 45164! We can reasonably think that between 3 and 4 hundred of us will give 40 bucks. So we can count on 12000$! We can begin to do something with this. Support 3 or 4 guys and may be help a bunch of others for the travel: I think also of American people himself.
-fourthly, Those 3 or 4 guys are very well known. Gaieus - Tig - Fredo - Chris Fullmer - Thomthom -Jim - Solo - Remus -Boofredlay - ..? |||(well and so many other so fine sketchy fellows..)
-fifthly, Have you ever gave a penny for downloading and use all the splendid free tools which make Su a good tool? For me I have given very few. So we can consider it is time to fill the gap with a useful exchange.
-sixthly, people we are going (may be) to send, they will do their best to report a lot to the community.
Reversely, are we going to ask them anything for free as they had been went there with the help of their own full money??-seventh, It would be a very very great thing to show to Google SketchUP team that a welding community exist, a serious one, enough strong to godfather his delegates.
In conclusion: Science Fiction people is able to make this help a reality Do we want to make this help a science fiction?
If necessary, I'm ready to give a little bit more.
simon.

Simon
I agree with you that we should send a few delegates and the idea to contribute $40 is a good one. My questions are:
Who do you send?
What message doe you send with them?
Sketchucation is a commercial enterprise so the directors go using Forum funds - which guests do you send - TIG, Thom Thom, FRedo....We need heavy hitters to go, people who have contributed exceptional content to our community. If this is going to happen let me know where to send my contribution.
-
quite sincerely simon le bon i think that what your pursue would be only testimonial without any effect and just because of one strong reason :
it has been clearly proved on the last release of SketchUp that GOOGLE does not count on ruby developers that have improved so much the software. Just do not care at all to include and merge and advance the sofware in that way. Instead they invented the Dynamic Components.
I think we should look after to get the @last boys back with us stealing from google the copyright or something,
have a nice day -

What do you think? It should be good to support (travel+accommodation) 3, maybe 4 delegates: 1 main contributor, 1 or 2 main developers, 1 main graphic artist.
and if some else money remains, use it to help some deputies for the travel.@unknownuser said:
flights are nearly €800. Then there's accommodation which I imagine will be another €500+.
If we agree with that, the choice doesn't need a very large discuss isn't it?
Depending if they want and are able to go but the names are:
-Gaieus as the main contributor (who else can pretend?)
-TIG, Fredo, Thomthom, Chris Fullmer, as main developers (since Didier Bur remains a so fine companion but seems to fly on other adventures)
-Solo as the main graphic artist which also is one of the very firsts contributors. If some money remains:We can proceed to a vote (same system as " Speed modelling Challenge") to decide for the deputies.
@dermotcoll said:

what torments the community since Su7:
-multicore engine.
-renew basic tools & integrate the brand new ones.
-a constant collaboration between Su team and users.
+a system of aid for achieved new tools!@juanv.soler said:

Hey Man! You are more revolutionary (rebellious) than me, but I'm not far to think the same. In addition the Su team approach and spirit in a way bristles my fur
Anyway so many free efforts have been done to invent the main tools of Sketchup, that we must try to convince Google Su team to work with us in order to keep SU alive and vigorous .

Well, I got an invite but not necessarily (only) for what I am doing here but (also maybe) what I am doing over the SketchUp Help Forum of Google. There are a couple of people "cross posting" in both forums...
@dermotcoll said:

Unfortunately this is not likely to be the case. I am not sure I can go either due to these financial things. Whatever money we have saved up so far will most probably go into development and new features of SketchUcation - maybe even the forums (to the point we can heck the given forum software) but definitely other parts of the site.
-
I would be glad to send any of the Global Moderators - they have an excellent grasp of the main issues we are encountering. I just cant believe that with the money Google make, they couldn't host a web based basecamp for the minions
-
Come on guys, September is tomorrow
Is this a so big question that you can't put 10, 20 or 40 bucks right on the table without so much reflexion??
We can ask to Mike Lucey to open a special PayPal account that everything will be clear and anonymous if needed.
We can also proceed to a vote like done by Tig here: [Poll] Have you been invited to 3D Basecamp 2010? to get a prospective view on we can do!

Well, Simon, I (for instance) would not feel comfortable if I used members' money here to travel to Boulder.
As I think of it however, we could have made a raffle; everyone (who has been invited) could have put in a couple of nominations, anyone could "buy" these lottery tickets (for a reasonable price each) and the "winners" of the raffle could have then been invited and the money spent on those travelling (both who gave the invitations and who won the lottery or something).
But it's like only about a week for the nominations closing...
Maybe I will put a few on eBay...

I don't see why? You give for free a comfortable part of your daily life to support and help SCF. So you know everybody, you read each post and can recall for help a great number of them, you participate to each big debate, this way you are better indicated than no one to speak under our name. And in my mind, to be one of our delegate in Boulder is a true job! Hear, speak, cultivate the contacts, and report on everything as completely as possible. So!..
I also authorize myself to recall some words from TIG:
Subject: 3D Basecamp 2010!!!!!@tig said:
Mike Lucey, as THE leading light in the whole Sketchup Community and with ears in the right places, could suggest that Google forks out some cash to help get some selected 'speakers' there ? It doesn't need to be business-class and the Hilton... That would greatly enhance the event and give non-US based users a chance to contribute, meet and exchange ideas.
Most tool-makers like Fredo do their great stuff 'for free', or at a very nominal cost: so no one is getting rich doing this [unlike Google...] AND let's not forget that there are others like Jean L or Simon le B [with their many many great tips] and Chris F [without his scripter's hat on, like his earlier scene-use presentation] who have many valuable insights into getting the best out of Sketchup.
Personally I would love to go... but it seems too much to spend months' of my personal income doing so, especially when every week I already give lots of my time and tools freely to Sketchuppers all over the world [and thus indirectly benefit Google as the fountain-head.]
So I simply suggest that Mike puts forward the suggestion. Then if it doesn't fall on stony ears, a list of 'speakers' from the forums' membership who Google might at least 'subsidize' - after all WE ARE the beacon of the Sketchup world
But OK I must admit that I have to give up with my TAFF idea: so few reply, 0 proposition.
Excuse me but I'm a bit ashamed that the community I am invested in, answers this way to the so wonderful generosity of our developers and contributors.
I am what I am stupidly swimming in a wrong dreaming world

I wouldn't be disappointed at the poor response. If we take time to let the invites filter out then TIG's poll will provide the feedback the community needs. From there SCF can then look to making it case for a stronger presence by those who were overlooked.
Money is a sensitive issue at the best of times and most of us are living in different times since the last 3DBC. Not to mention that people, who would add value to the event, being unable to attend for predetermined reasons.
Your gesture is noble, and maybe necessary, but it's not yet known if we will need this approach. I hope we're represented by members who shaped SU and created this great community
It wait and see for now
-
I thought it was a noble initiative, but I would not be willing to send my money to a dis-organized fund that I wasw uncertain would be well managed.
If that TAFF had a system where you could set up your own initiative, and people could just send a little money, and then people who were invited could sign up to be eligble to get the money, that would be cool. But it sounds like a gift tax nightmare, and really more difficulties than it might be worth. But, I really hate money and having to deal with it. It is not something I'm good at.

So on that basis, you don't pay your taxes to the US government?
Rick

Yes, Simon, I also have to agree with some of the above.
The very problem is that even the time allowed is so short that setting up an effective yet fully transparent and traceable system seems to be impossible and even those who got those personal invites are so confused and have so little info that no-one knows what will happen.
And I know that many-many member whom I would really love to nominate for instance (not that I have so many nominations), could not afford the trip either. This is the worst part.

hehe, I DO pay, and I use that as my basis for knowing how I hate to give money to dis-organized funds that I am uncertain will be well managed

My hope is the same. It seems to me natural (in the actual "Money sensitive issue") to assist them in the charge. Nothing noble in my case, just friendship into a powerful community i guess.

It sounds like a gift tax nightmare: this argument touch me a lot. It can be a reality for who would assume to administer donations, for who would be supported.

I thought it was what I was not far from proposing?
0)just send a little money (40$ was certainely too much: 10$ get a better chance)
1)support 3,4 delegates (a fixed amount of money each)
2)help for the travel decided by vote for people who sigh up to be eligible, depending of the money remaining!( the difficulty is that the price of the travel vary a lot, and the help can't be the same)Thank you guys for these words. Your replies show me the friendship you credit me! I understand the difficulties. The better is probably to do nothing
and avoid nightmares.
But don't worry! my only 40 bucks for final donation shouldn't give nightmare to anyoneI am going to do in a normal way: use the paypal link for each main developer I haven't yet made my donation.

Google team makes me nervous. It comes and won't hear nothing. It sounds like if everything is perfect with SketchUp, no cloud in the blue sky! Would It be possible to deal new ideas this way? This is not won.

I post this here because i need to know one thing: how do you get hold of an invite to the BaseCamp? I'd love to go, really, If I knew I was going my life would be really nicer right now so... how do I get an Invitation? I read the basecamp page but got no clue.
If I had an invitation, I know I would have the cash to go (but I should start to think now about a new passport! OMG!), but I don't know how to get one.
If it is difficult, I would be quite happy to help someone of this splendid community to go...
Please, if any of you has some information, let me know!!
