3D Basecamp 2010!!!!!
-
I can understand why it's on invitation only and why it's limited to 200 people. But I'm sure that a lot of people who are not invited (deadline is today), would have come, starting with me and two of my colleagues (nothing in my mailbox , but it's not surprising, whatever we do with SketchUp, I'm sure we are still under the radar of the organizers).
It would like to see someone organizing a convention or something like this. One year in the USA, one year in Europe (should we have one year in Asia?). If the dates are always the same or known well before, I'm sure there will be a lot of people and certainly some sponsors. I'm sure the challenge is not to have people coming but to keep the spirit of a basecamp and limit the fees to ... let say 0
Now, I make a wish: That everyone who wants to attend this Basecamp can do it, at least thanks to a Webinar.
(PS: I'm not sure what would be the most efficient way to communicate during the webinar, but I'm sure that if after each session the speaker come on a Wave or something allowing interaction, the exchanges would be very interesting and productive).

Did not know that.

Nothing in mine either so I can deduce the same.

Deadline today? How does one even register???
-
I read in the FAQ http://sites.google.com/site/3dbasecamp2010/faq
"Who can attend the event?
To attend the event, you must be 18 years of age or older and receive an invitation from us.""What is the registration and confirmation timeline for the event?
July 2 - Round 1 registration deadline
July 13 - Nomination form due
July 14 - Nominee invitations are sent out via e-mail
July 21 - Deadline for nominees to register
"So there's still hope as July 2nd is not over yet and more important, if there's a round 1, there should be a round 2 somewhere to have the 200 attendees "How many event invitations will be extended?
The precise number of invitations we extend will depend on the amount of space we have available, but we estimate the number to be about 200." So keep your fingers crossed as some of you are very active here and this site has been the first a Google Evangelist pointed out as a place to look when I asked a very specific question during last AIA.By the way, is there somewhere the list of event where Google is exhibiting to promote SketchUp? At least there's AIA convention. But anyone knows the others, if any?
-
They used to have a listing of all the events the Google SketchUp team was going to attend worldwide. I'll see if I can find that link somewhere.
And today was the last day for the first round of invitees to register. So if you already got invited, make sure yoo go register if you want to attend! Then those who were already invited submit a list of (upto 10) candidates they would like to see attend. Then it looks like those people will be selected somehow to fill in the rest of the open seats. And they will be notified by July 14, and have to register by the 21st.

For those not in the US - would you have been able to get there if it had been announced further in advance? .......
I for one would certainly have tried to find other sources to get to Boulder if I had known earlier. I waited to say "No" till today and it hurts. As it is now, we have made our plans for this summer/vacation and I just can't afford what it takes to also travel+stay to attend 3D Basecamp. Maybe next time I can extend my visite USA to see some friends in San Francisco.
(If I can make someone (who is really interested+can afford) happy by nominating, let me know).
I hope all who attend the "unconference" will have a great time in Boulder.

Hi guys,
As always, enthusiasm for 3D Basecamp is high– both here at SketchUcation and with the SketchUp team at Google. I think we're going to have a great event again this year, and I look forward to seeing all of you that can make it. I appreciate the difficulty traveling to Boulder represents for those of you on the other side of the world, but we just couldn't swing an event in Europe this time around. We talked about it, but in the end we decided to celebrate our birthday at home here in Boulder.
Since there seems to be some uncertainty here on the invitation process, let me try to clarify. We are trying something a bit different this year. The idea was to invite a group of folks who we knew, and let them invite some people they knew, and so on until we filled up the available spots. Many regulars on this forum have been invited, and each of them can nominate ten more folks for the next wave of invites. Those folks have until the 13th of July to make their nominations.
So if you want to come, and you didn't get an invite yet... speak out here and ask for someone to nominate you!

Thanks for the heads up
-
Well I hope I get picked from the nomination pool as I have the means and time to go. I am sure it will be a good time.
-
Okay, so it's nothing more than an office party, a bean feast for the boys. We can all go back to sleep!
-
He says 'most regular members on this forum have been invited'... but I haven't, neither has Solo and several other 'regulars'... It'd be interesting to make an anonymous poll to see who actually has been invited. I can't help but feel that we are being 'sidelined' for whatever nefarious greater Google purpose
-
He said "many", not "most". Big difference there.
I'm confused, why call it an office party? Do you want to go or not? If you do, speak up. Lets get as many SCF people there as possible.
Which is better, the system last time where they randomly selected individuals, many of who were only vagualey familiar with SU. Or this method where they invite people they know, and let them nomiate the rest. (I'm not sure which I think is better honestly).
-
Dear Chris,
Okay, the 'office party' remark was a bit of a throwaway comment, but the description of the organisation behind the Basecamp (message by jbacus) prompted the remark. Maybe I have missed the purpose of the Basecamp, but it does seem that someone in the office said, "hey guys, are we having a Basecamp this year, it's getting kind of late to organise it now? Who are we going to invite". Perhaps that is where this thread should be going. Google and the SU community should be asking the question:
In addition to a meeting for enthusiasts, what should the purpose of a Basecamp be?
Even if I was a competent SU artist or Ruby master, and had been invited, I still wouldn't commit time and funds to going without seeing the attendees list and the list of presentations. To be frank, I found last year's Basecamp rather disappointing as many of the presentations were pitched at the intermediate level SU user, and sometimes the newbie. The Basecamp should be a meeting of professionals and/or expert SU users and plugin developers. By all means have sessions for tricks and technqiues, and for all level users, but most of us (forgive my presumption here) want to see the boundaries being pushed, which should also include how Sketchup interfaces with other programs (CAD programs and rendering engines).
Kind regards,
Bob -
Quite an interesting question: What is the purpose of the Basecamp?
There are so many possible answers that with only 200 people I imagine that some attendees won't find anyone to have a valuable "Unconference" session. For example, if my team and myself were invited (3 people but I'm still not posting a request here as suggested in one post here. I would have to double check for the budget and our agenda before), some topics I'd like to discuss are the usage of SketchUp as a BIM 5D system; how to really program Dynamic Component (in Java or Ruby) and turn SketchUp into an event-driven programming system; Green buildings and SketchUp; Controlling the real world through SketchUp (we have interesting results there); ...
I have two questions:
- Is a Webinar or at least a live broadcast over the Internet is planned or not?
- I'm quite interested in knowing the list of topics you would like to exchange on during a BaseCamp.
-
i wanna go. .. . if nothing more than a reason to hang out in Boulder for a few days. nice.

Hello Guys,
What wonder that this meeting of passionate Sketchup, I am sorry for not being able to participate either by distance, whether the commitments.
But I'll leave a request to the organizers of this event, please consider the possibility of a meeting for all of Latin America, taking place in Brazil.
It would be wonderful.
Kind hegards

It seems like a pretty good system to me, although people may find it short notice.
To have a smaller event like this and by inviting long standing members of the SU community, who in turn invite who they see as deserving people, the event will be pretty full of experienced and knowledgable people. Sounds great!
To be honest, whichever way Google would have chosen to do this would have created the same amount of unrest. One of the difficult things for some members to deal with is the problem of feeling hurt because they did not receive an invite. It's difficult to please everyone.
I think people need to think carefully about committing to go unless they really intend to. Many of us want to go, but there is a difference between wanting and being able to due to time or money.
I say goodluck to all who receive invites and manage to make it.
I look forward to the online seminars. -
Who want to got to Basecamp and are able to go to Basecamp and intend to go to Basecamp if they are invited?
-
I do.
-
I do too,
well actually we are a team of three using SketchUp and developing plugins to explain, prescribe and sale dynamic passive solutions. But we figure out that three individuals coming from the same firm would be too much (it's more than 1% of the attendees), even if each of us does have a real added value to the other. So we limit ourselves to 1 and it's not me (now if the organizers disagree, ...)
I saw my colleagues posting a message here to ask if someone can send him an invitation. But I still not see his post. So if you send me the invitation (or 3 ) then I will transmit it to him. If we receive two invitations (after all, you might reply to me and after to him, we will immediately warn the one inviting us that we are all set).
Thanks
