You have the Pro version, Jan, don't you?

Also, what's up with the problems with SU 7 exported kmz files? (I know that Unity works best with the "GE 4" kmz export from SU 6 unless I am totally mistaken).

Actually we are just about to buy the pro version so this came just right in time. πŸ˜„

I always use fbx to import to unity.
My first tries with collada wasnt that great either but its said to work.

Well, I have SU Pro too so the export/import stuff does not affect me that much - I have just read complaints with the latest kmz versions in SU 7 and especially SU 7.1.

I might have a project where I could also use Unity so I guess I should dive into the free version at least to learn the app as much as possible by the time it is needed.

              Nice!
I've been messing around with Unity a fair bit lately, mostly with node following and AI, but I've still got a ways to go.
Does it say when 3.0 is expected to come out, or are they at that point yet?

"This summer." is all they say, but the nice thing is that you can preorder it, get the latest version now (2.6.1), get early access to the 3.0 beta when it's availible AND get it for $300 less. ($1200 instead of the ordinary $1500.) Of cause there is also the free version.

Great so far. And the coming version has some reeeeaaally nice things like Beast lightmapping and Umbra occlusion culling. Both normally costs "A LOT" but are included in v3. As one of the developer said: "We pay them tons of money, you get Beast & Umbra for no additional cost."
Workflow with LightUp works great also. Now is the time to jump on the train. πŸ˜‰

I think I've tried every realtime engine out there and to me Unity is the best compromise between quality, price, features, potential, workflow.
For example, for the best quality Cryengine is unmatched but you can't use it commercially without paying hundred of thousands and can't publish to a website. Also Cryengine workflow isn't great for vizualisation work.

Brilliant job Pixero! The interactivity Unity provides for project visualization is really interesting and fun. Very advanced, although I wish it had a softer camera movement like LightUp has. How Do your customers react? Bet they are freaking out...

Btw, one question plase: is Unity capable of exporting to an executional file format? I have tested a CAD-software called PYTHA last year, and was really fond of its strength in visualization (additional module called Radio-Lab) - especially that you can create an .exe file which your customer can open and walk through without downloading or installing a viewer or anything. (there are many more features like index creation for guided tours, animation, audio data, video textures, et cetera... workflow with SU via 3DS quite smooth)

With the new Beast lightmapping Unity is getting more and more interesting for me... how in heaven can I keep pace with all these powerful innovations? (a friend recently said that one lifetime is not enough for a 3D-artists' wishlist πŸ˜† )

                            cheers

Thanks, the customers have liked it very much so far.
Unity can export to either a Windows exe file or a OSX app or a website.
There is also Unity versions that can export to Iphone/Ipad and the different game consoles.

Oh, that is good news, thanks for the information! Does the free version have the .exe export feature also? I could not find it in the license comparison chart...
How did you find learning Unity compared to learning SU?
(plz forgive my curiosity, i only have one lifetime πŸ˜„ )

Great news. Excellent work Pixero, I hope we can have the opportunity to learn from you! β˜€
I tried the SketchUp>>LightUp>>Unity workflow before and I was impressed, but I had trouble with my complex SU models (I tend to overdo things..). Since I'm officially done with my university study I'll definitely mess around with Unity again!

By the way, has anyone tried out PlayUp's new Unity exporter (http://playuptools.blogspot.com/2010/04/exporting-to-unity-3d-now-available.html)? It seems like a quick way to export stuff from SU>>Unity.

Could you try this almost free Tool. It is a tool for exporting Sketchup models into Unity3D. It seems to be easy way to get Sketchup models into Unity3D. Anyway, I had some problems when using it and therefore I would like to know if I am doing something wrong. Please let me know if you get it working. The author of the tool seems to be really helpful when having problems.

Here are some screenshots that I have made with free version of Unity3D for landscape modeling (golf course). Basically I have created the terrain model and splatmaps for texturing terrain in Sketchup. The rest is pretty much created in Unity. The next phase would be to bring some of the buildings that I have modeled with Sketchup into the model.

I think that Unity has improved quite a lot recently. In Unity 4.0 the free version also includes real time shadows for one light source (sun).
