Internal Kitchen Render - Twilight Easy Low+

Hi Guys
Here goes with my first attempt at a PR render of a fairly big job I'm pitching for - I used the omni lights as can be seen and I tried using an image of my own for the background hoping to see it through the windows but it just didnt come off - as you can see - any guidance on what I should be doing there - I know I could add alot of counter clutter but am more interested in the kitchen units at the minute - a heads up on entourage for interiors would be good too!!
Please comment and criticise.

A great start.
I like the dark windows as it gives a rich reflection and a great reason to have lights on as it looks like a night render.
I would revisit all the metallic surfaces as they do not look right, try using a library preset in Twilight.
The lights are too close to ceiling and light components are missing, try using an IES setting as it will be more realistic.
The floor material looks like an exterior texture, remember it's a kitchen and floors need to be grouted and sealed, try a tile or even a stained concrete (popular this side of the pond)Hope this helps. -

Maybe you should place a light towards your background pic. I had the same problem the first time I tried to put a cyclo behind windows...I think your omni lights are a little too close from the ceiling also.
The fridge and oven textures don't look as nice as they could.Entourage would definately add something to it but it looks pretty good to me so far !

How far away should the lights be from the ceiling ?
All the metallic surfaces are set to Twilight template settings - they are stainless steel appliances but I cant get the finish I am after - I didnt see them in the library settings either!
When you say light components, do you mean that I should model a light fixture and add to the model?
I see the IES tab on the light editor but it is greyed out - I do not have any IES settings to work from - how do I generate them?
Again - I am stuck for materials - where can I get these? -
I think there's gotta be some absolute rule on how remote should a light source be from an object but unfortunately I've relied on experience so far... Try and place them slightly further from the ceiling in order not to get this halo.
I've never used IES lights yet. I think they are physically accurate light presets from light manufacturers

nice one, about the lights, try to imagine a real fixture and where the bulb would be. usually about 6" below the ceiling. if you still get harsh lighting then dim the lights a bit, try again, repeat...
as far as textures try this http://www.cgtextures.com/.
if you remember my kitchen i beleive all the materials are SU except 1 or 2. but i do have the SU material bonus pack from here: http://sketchup.google.com/download/bonuspacks6.html i'd suggest to DL it. the component packs are good too.
as far as your windows go i suspect you may have two layers, try only one. do you know about back faces? this could also be the culprit.
PS you'll never get a great result until you start using the higher (unbiased) presets, i always use easy 09.

Beautiful modeling my friend. Cabinetry looks great. Not digging the floor though. Looks old and worn out.
One thing you may want to consider is switching the Camera to Two Point Perspective before you render and this will straighten out your vertical lines.

I tried a few changes as per your suggestions - can't get IES to load - when I go into it to load the ones leminilab suggested it still greys out and I cant load any to try them.
System crashed a couple of times on me as well as I dont have a great processor for the bigger models and it is struggling big time with it. I have another in the oven as we speak and I will post the results when its finished. Anyone any tips on this IES problem?

Did you try the collection Frymoro posted on the Twilight forum? Should be able to copy and past lights right from the attached .skp file.

I had just about given up when I noticed a tab (From scene) which I hadnt touched before. I was able to upload an Ies file and am looking forward to seeing what comes out - I have set it for Easy Low + just to see what effects have been generated by the changes made then I will cook it over night on Interiors 09.

This is taking for ages in the low+ setting - ray tracing is only at 24% after and hour - should this take this long at such a low setting?

Sometimes ies files do take a long time. While they can be the most accurate - it is often unnecessary. Here are a couple of very helpfull links from the Twilight site regarding lighting;

It took me a couple of read throughs to fully understand what they are saying - but these are great reference points.With regards to the materials - remember you can use all of the Kerkythea materials in Twilight as well!

Hi Dermot,
Have you tried just lowering your omni lights a little ? IES lights are very demanding which may explain your rendering time I think.
Maybe by just lowering your omni and removing the IES...

Wonderfull model! I deleted the lights you had and added som recessed downlights and a fixture I found on the warehouse. I also adjusted some of the material settings and replaced the floor / counter materials. Hope you don't mind - but it was fun to work with someone else's model for an hour or so. Here is a quick npr style to show what I did. I already made some lighting adjustments and have one in the cooker for processing overnight.

I see You don't make full detailed models of the furniture. Don't You use SketchUp to make cutlist?

I design and install but I buy in all the carcases. There are carcase companies who are much bigger machinery and I make money designing and installing - it would take me too long to cut, edge and assemble the carcases myself so I leave it to the big guys. All non standard items, I draw detailed working drawings for and either make them myself or again farm out to the big guys. Works well for me.
