      Hi,

I've been searching for an answer, for sometime, but without success. I hope someone can help me. Why does the UVW Transform (Repeat / Offset) parameteres of the Noise map simply don't take effect when changed, in VRay for SketchUp?

I'm trying to stretch the Noise map avaiable in VRay, to simulate brushed metal, for example. In Mental Ray (3D Max), it's quite simple. Just change the value, and the noise gets stretched.

On the other hand, in VRay it's impossible! Does anyone know how to control the Noise map in VRay for SketchUp? Or, if it's not possible, how does the tiling of Noise (repeat) affect the material? It needs to be mapped in SketchUp, to take effect?

Well, any answers will be of great help!

      Thanks!

The noise map should conform to the UVW coordinates of the SU material. You can control the variables of the noise map (size, frequency, amplitude, etc.) by using the scroll bar to the right to access the additional parameters.

Ok. I know how to control the variables (size, amplitude, etc). My doubt is about the UVW Parameters. It conforms to the coordinates of the SU material. Ok. But if I'm not using a linked material? The thing is that when you change the Repeat value, for example, nothing happens to the material.

When you edit the noise map in 3D Max, you can obtain lines instead of dots. If you use it as a bump map and insert values like 8 vertically and 1 horizontally, the dots get stretched, so you can simulate brushed metal materials. That's what I can't get in VRay for SketchUp. Is it a limitation of the software? What I can see, so far, is that no matter what value you put in the UVW Transform coordinates, the noise always look as dots.

Is there a way to do this, or it's only possible using bitmaps?

          Thanks.

Not using linked materials? You're using the old VfSU version?

Btw, are you relying on the material preview in the VfSU material editor? (I've never found that reliable)

Yeah, I'm using the old one. Unfortunatelly, I couldn't upgrade it yet.

Anyway, the answer is yes and no. I tried the preview, didn't change anything. I tried to render, and didn't change anything also. Is it something weird? And as you asked, upgrading would be a solution? Is the new version more reliable?

Generally, yes it's more reliable. But it does have its own set of issue. Most notable that the parsing time takes much longer (you MUST remove all group/component materials and only apply materials to faces to avoid insane times) and the camera output of the new version doesn't match the new one. (The new matches closer to SU)
I also had to hold of upgrade due to some projects I had going where the a number of Photoshop files where set up for the old output.

Not sure if it corrects this issue. I've not tried to stretch noise maps.

Ok - I had a quick look. For the Noise map it seems that VfSU ignores the repeat values... smells like a bug. Contact ASGVis support.

It doesn't even react to changes to the SU mapping...

                      Thanks, Thomas.

I was starting to think that my intelligence was not that reliable... πŸ˜† But, thanks God, as you said, it looks like a bug. Hope they fix it soon, 'cause I consider that using noise is usually pretty much easier than creating or finding good bitmaps.

They have re-written the core to work on Macs and are currently back-porting that core to PC. Alpha/beta testing in progress. Will see if that addresses it.
